Imperfect: The general title-page and the title-pages for the four divisions, except the last, are wanting; also the preface and several leaves at the end.

These volumes belonged to Samuel Vassall (H. U. 1695) and appear to have been used by him in college, bearing the dates 1692 and 1694 in several places. They afterwards belonged to Rev. Joseph Haven (H. U. 1774) of Rochester, N. II., from whom they passed to William Mather in 1790. In 1809, Rev. Joseph Stevens Buckminster (H. U. 1800) gave them to Samuel Harris, a young man of extraordinary promise in philological studies, and at the time an undergraduate in Harvard College. With the assistance of friends, he had been enabled to enter college as a Junior in the fall of 1808 when 26 years of age, having previously practised engraving. On July 7, 1810 (shortly before Commencement), he was drowned while swimming in Charles River. A contemporary account in the Harvard lyceum says that Hebrew, Chaldee, Syriac, and Arabic were no less familiar to him than his own tongue, and that he had a thorough acquaintance with Persian, Ethiopie, Samaritan, Bengali, Turkish, and Hindustani, besides being conversant with most modern languages and having made a special study of the Indian languages of North America. The college library possesses five volumes of his Mss. relating to Oriental subjects; they comprise, according to the account of them in the first volume, (1) a collection of alphabets of various Oriental tongues, with some illustrative remarks, a Persic grammar, a Persic and English dictionary; (2) a lexicon, Arabic and Latin, with an introduction of 30 pages of exercises in the Niskhi character; (3) a portfolio of various papers on grammar, language, and Oriental literature; (4) an Arabic manuscript a copy of a portion of Abulfeda's Annales muslemici, covering the first three years chronicled in that work]; and (5) a Hebrew grammar entitled Oriental grammar on Oriental principles.

After the death of Harris, the Hebrew Bible came into the possession of Dr. J. G. Palfrey (H. U. 1815), who gave it a few months before his death to Dr. A. P. Peabody, by whom it is now presented to the library of the Divinity School.

The principal notes are by Buckminster and Harris, those of the latter being taken from Geddes. Others in pencil have been added by Dr. Palfrey.
