Bartlett, J. Gordon. Edith Dayton: a novel. N. Y., Brentano Bros., [1886.] 3-226 p. D.

pap., 50 c.

14

The scene alternates from Winmere to London, England. At the former place we first meet the heroine, Edith Dayton, after a quarrel with her betrothed; this is followed by a reconciliation; then Edith puts into execution her threat to visit London, where she meets Laurence Neale. Some strange complications ensue, and the reader becomes interested in the several love affairs of Laura Vale, Lady Mona, and Saifie Ahedon before Edith's romance shapes itself satisfactorily. The peccadilloes of some of the characters do not lessen the interest in the story, and they certainly add truth to the picture of English society-life.

Bost.,

A dainty collection of verses, dedicated " To the memory of Eleanor Putnam "-the gifted and lamented wife of the author. Mr. Bates has hitherto been known as a writer of stories and as the author of a strong novel, "The wheel of fire." But in this little volume he proves that his genius is equally well adapted to lyrical expression. The Boston Traveller, in reviewing the book, says: "Here we have a true poet, whose thought is as deep as it is delicate and subtle whose expression is chiselled and polished to exquisite form and perineated with that truth with which nature and spirit are in eternal accord."

Baxley, I: R. The Temple of Alanthur, with other poems. N. Y., G: P. Putnam's Sons, 1886. 8+136 p. D. cl., $1.25. "The tale which names the volume is a pure invention, with Egypt and its mythology for picturesque setting. Alanthur is an architect and sculptor, building a temple to Thoth, and betrothed to Ranethis, of whom Naredin, son of Thoth and a mortal woman, is enamored. Ranethis resists the passion of Naredin, who in his rage destroys part of the temple of Alanthur and is judged by Osiris, his doom being banishment to the vapors of unformed worlds until the last judgment, unless he shall redeem himself by penitence. This story is wrought out with unmistakable poetic strength... The rest of the poems in this book are nearly all unusual in tone, and some of striking character. "Baldric and Lissoy' tells a tale of knighthood and enchantment in verse of singular masculine force and with a profusion of lurid imagery. "The gold-dream is a remarkable allegory of the passion of avarice, and is matched by as powerful an allegory of death, "The journey of Lord Eglamore."-Springfield Republican.

Woman in the past, present and future; from the German by H. B. Adams Walther. N. Y., Julius Bordollo & Co., 1886. 268 p. S. (Labor lib., no. 2.) pap., 30 c.

An argument aiming to show the necessity of placing men and women on the same footing of equality, socially and politically. The author is a socialist and an atheist, and would extend to woman the same license to ignore moral laws that he claims for man. He reviews woman's position in her relations to man from the beginning of time to the present day, and draws, what he considers, an aticing picture of her future, when freed from the social and moral restraints which he believes now impede her progress, that no intelligent and conscientious woman can desire to see realized.

The material comprised in this volume was first used in a series of lectures delivered before the students of the Hartford Theological Seminary. Some of the questions with which socialism deals, such as the rights of labor, the responsibilities and restrictions of wealth, the sources and cure of pauperism, the origin of crime and its proper treatment, and the true doctrine of family life, are critically discussed from the standpoint of a Christian minister, modern socialism being found to be "the enemy of religion and of the family, and so the enemy of man." Opens with a brief historical and descriptive sketch of socialistic phases and methods. The writer is pastor of Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn, N. Y.

The time of this narrative is sixty years ago, the locality is "Fordyce Co., in one of our Middle States." The hostile feelings existing between Federalists and Democrats, and the efforts of the earlier Abolitionists, are introduced as historical elements. The "mirage" is supposed to be the distant, fascinating glimpse of the promise of abolition. The thread of the story is slight, but almost impossible to condense. Some of the leading characters, especially the women, are very well drawn.

Mr. Benjamin says his work" is not a technical treatise, nor is it addressed in any wise to the professional electrician. It is simply an effort to present the leading principles of electrical science, their more important appli cations, and of these last the stories, in a plain and, it is hoped, a readable way." There are no formulas in the book; only such technical terms as have now made their way into every-day use are employed; and the more strictly scientific branches of the subject, such as measurement, testing, etc., are omitted altogether. The chapters at the close, giving descriptions of the more recent inventions and achievements, are of special interest and importance.

Benjamin, S G. W. Persia and the Persians. Bost., Ticknor & Co., 1887 1886.] 14+507 p. por. and il. Q. cl., $5; hf. cf., $9.

In the winter of 1882-1883 the author was appointed by President Arthur to the legation in Persia, just created by act of Congress. The experiences connected with the establishment and conduct of the legation at Teherân suggested the present volume. His position of course gave him exceptional opportunities for seeing the country, and penetrating into the domestic life of the people. He had many novel and entertaining adventures of his own, which he combines with graphic descriptions, and political and other observations of great value. He does ample justice too, to the rich stores of Persian poetry and legends, its strange customs, and its romantic scenery and architecture. The volume is an unusually handsome one; printed in large type with ample spacings on fine rich paper with generous margins The illustrations are many and very good. The dark blue cloth binding is richly stamped in red and gold. Bennett, Harriett M. and Mack, Rob. Ellice. All around the clock. N. Y., E. P. Dutton & Co., [1886.] 64 p. il. sq. O. bds., $2.

A modern English story in which some of the characters resemble the "Gibeonites" of Biblical fame, hence the title. The adoption of a child results in a case of mixed identity, and is the principal incident in a number of sensational ones which make up the plot. The scene alternates from Hackney Marsh to London and Hoxton. The characters represent three grades of society: the aristocracy of London, the respectable working class of Hackney Marsh, and the poor of Hoxton slums. Besant, Walter. Children of Gibeon. N. The author of this work ranks as the best living authorty on the subject of the Aztecs. He is a distinguished French scientist, who spent twenty-five years in Mexico, and to his own studies has added the testimony of all available authorities-those who saw Mexico in its splendor, as well as the more modern writers who have treated that interesting and romantic region. The book thus presents the results of all investigations to the present day. Although of great value to scholars who have specially studied the subject, the work is more especially intended for the general reader, imperfectly acquainted with the history and character of the Aztecs. To this end it is written in an easy and attractive style.

The unknown author, looking with a prophetic eye into the distant future, depicts the probable fate of the United States and Europe. "Bietigheim" is a great battle which takes place in Germany during the war of 1890-'91. war is brought about by a number of little disputes between this country and Germany concerning the rights of our naturalized citizens. The campaign, in which the European states, with the exception of Russia and Austria, are our allies, is fought in Europe-the Americans being the victors. The result is a spread of Republicanism throughout Europe, and an almost total ruin of imperialism at the beginning of the 20th century. The moral influence of our own country in this condition of things remedies many of the evils now existing between labor and capital springing from monopolies, the tariff, etc. *Bigelow, Melville Madison. Mr. Bishop of the large hardware firm of Millecramp & Co., N. Y Cy, is ordered to rest by his employers and goes to a quiet place on the shores of Lake Champlain. Here he meets Jorman the "psychologist," who becomes a factor for good in his life, influencing him to give up his insane desire for wealth and speculation, and to devote himself to the custivation of the higher capacities of his nature. The volume is composed chiefly of conversations between these men, embracing all subjects, and treating love, marriage, fraud, religion, politics, business, and many other topics wholly from a psychological standpoint. The author shows an analytical mind and keeps the individuality of his characters clearly defined. A pretty lovestory is a subordinate element of the book. *Black, C: C.
