"

Alcott, Louisa M. Jo's boys, and how they turned out; a sequel to Little men." Bost., Roberts Bros., 1886. 365 p. por. S. cl., $1.50. For seven years Miss Alcott has worked at intervals upon this sequel to "Little Men." The story opens ten years after the close of that book. Dan, Nat, Emil, Demi, Stuffy, and Teddy all reappear. The scene is laid at Plumfield, where the boys all come to visit Mrs. Jo Bhaer. Mrs. March has died before the story opens, and Meg's husband also. Mrs. Meg, Mrs. Amy, and Mrs. Joe all live near together and the many scenes of fun and frolic_described take place in one or the other of their homes. There is a great deal of love-making which will delight older girls and almost all the marriages turn out well. Miss Alcott says she has endeavored to suit everyone by many weddings, few deaths, and as much prosperity as the eternal fitness of things will permit. She also says the curtain has now fallen forever on the March family. *Alden's cyclopædia of universal literature, presenting biographical and critical notices and specimens from the writings of eminent authors of all ages and all nations. Alden, Mrs. Is. M., ["Pansy," pseud.] The Browning boys. Bost., D. Lothrop & Co., [1886.] 5-109 p. I il. D. cl., 75 c.

The story of two boys who are suffering great poverty, through their father's illness and loss of work, and who desire to do something to help keep the family together. What they achieve both through their own earnest efforts and through the trust they learn to place in a higher power is well told. Each chapter aims to illustrate a Bible text.

Alden, Mrs. Is. M., [ Pansy," pseud.] Spun from fact. Bost., D. Lothrop & Co., [1886.] +338 p. il. D. cl., $1.50.

The story is that of a young girl, Jeannie Bartlett, who through a long and painful illness became, as it was suppos ed, crippled for life. From time to time stories came to her of the miraculous cures effected by prayer, and a hope grows up in her that even her case may not be beyond help. A time is set for a season of united prayer in the sick room. The friends gather about her in the large arm-chair in which she has been placed. One eager, heartfelt prayer follows another, and at the close the invalid, full of faith, and endowed with a new and wonderful strength, rises to her feet, and walks with a firm step across the floor. It is no temporary cure; her strength remains, and from that time forth she is whole and well. The author claims that the main incident of the story, as narrated, is true,

When quite a small boy Mr. Alton was for four years a page in the U. S. Senate. It is from this experience he has obtained a large part of the material embraced in this volume. It consists of anecdotes about public men and descriptions of the pranks of himself and his page associates. This side of the book, however, is secondary to the instructive element which pervades it. The writer digresses, continually going out of his course" to introduce peculiar specimens of legislative action, and to illustrate characteristics of the respective Houses; and he has, at times, sought to do more-to exhibit, by practical examples, the constitutional relations between the three departments of the General Government, as distinct, yet interdependent, parts of a mighty and harmonious system; to emphasize commanding principles of civil liberty and public law; and, in general, to stimulate in the minds ef American youth an active and patriotic interest in the political history and destiny of their country." A greater part of the volume appeared originally as a serial in St. Nicholas. Modifications and additions will be found in the present form.

:

Dr. Anders wishes it understood from the outset that his work does not claim to be either a treatise upon hygiene or botany he aims simply to set forth, in plain terms, the latest light regarding the effects of some of the various physiological functions in plants and flowers upon the atmosphere in general, and the air of dwellings in particular, as well as the application of this knowledge to the laws of health. Most of the conclusions put forward have been arrived at from the results of an almost continuous series of personal experiments extending over a period. of eight years. The chief purpose of the writer will have been accomplished if he succeeds in proving that plants and flowers, particularly when cultivated in-doors, are worthy to be placed in the foremost rank of sanitary agencies. The concluding chapters treat of the sanitary influences of forest-growth-a subject engrossing, and deservedly so, a large share of the attention of scientific

observers.

she loves because his father's money was made in trade, and accepts one she does not love for his title and social position. The ordeal she passes through is brightly told, with the aid of many little side issues in the way of flirtations and love affairs, and a good deal of clever, amusing talk.

In shallow waters: a novel. N. Y., Harper, 1886. 217 p. S. (Harper's handy ser., no. 64.) pap., 25 c.

To delineate a hero of an unusual type this story seems to have been written. Henry Dilworth belongs to English middle class life, is somewhat rough in exterior, and has few of the lighter graces of a gentleman; but at heart he is a hero, and a man of exquisite refinement and rare unselfishness. Agnes Leake meets him on the steamer

going out to Australia, to which country she is accompanying her newly married sister and brother-in-law. is a storm, the vessel runs on a rock, the newly married pair are drowned, and Agnes is rescued by Dilworth. brief residence on a desert island ensues; the couple are then found and get back to England, Dilworth in the mean

time marrying Agnes. The rest of the story deals with the

chief characteristics of the married pair, Agnes' selfishness, which is hid under a most charming exterior, finally wrecking Dilworth's life.

"Mr. Armour's work is somewhat in the line of Drummond's Natural law in the spiritual world,' but with more sharpness in his definitions and a closer adherence to Scripture in his argument. He does not, indeed, discuss so wide, and we must add so vague, a theme as the spirital world, but confines attention to redemption by atone ment, which he holds to be, in all its details, consonant with every idea of law."-Phila.
