The Human Genome Project has associated many mutant genes with physical ailments and the genetic basis of certain behavioral characteristics is being seriously discussed. In the 1920s and 1930s, advocates for eugenics claimed that genes influenced human behavior, but with no valid evidence. In Germany the Nazis adopted their ideas to justify violent anti-semitism. In this new, expanded edition of the English translation of his compelling book Todliche Wissenschaft, the distinguished German geneticist Benno Muller-Hill documents the long-suppressed collusion of eugenics and racist politics which resulted in the mass murder of millions. In a new Afterword, he warns against the misuse today of newly emerging knowledge about human heredity. In an accompanying essay, Nobel Laureate James D. Watson, an architect of this new era of genetics, vividly describes a recent visit to Berlin and his impressions of the legacy of eugenics in German science.

Stranica 20 - it is a rare and special good fortune for a theoretical science to flourish at a time when the prevailing ideology welcomes it, and its findings can immediately serve the policy of the state'.10 Again, replying to an invitation from the Reichminister for the Occupied Eastern Territories to act as a chairman of a session at an international 'Anti-Jewish Conference...
Stranica 16 - I hereby charge you with making all necessary preparations with regard to organizational and financial matters for bringing about a complete solution of the Jewish question in the German sphere of influence in Europe.
Stranica 39 - When a people wants, somehow or other, to preserve its own nature, it must reject alien racial elements, and when these have already insinuated themselves, it must suppress them and eliminate them. The Jew is such an alien and, therefore, when he wants to insinuate himself, he must be warded off.
Stranica 113 - manslaughter excluded by the statute of limitations," as in the case of Dr Borm, the director of an extermination centre. Murder remains murder even when the law shows itself to be impotent and the courts are unable to punish even one single person for the genocide of the German Gypsies. All indignation is in vain if it is not based on knowledge of the facts and if it does not endure. "If I do not stand up for myself, who will stand up for me? If I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when then?
Stranica 77 - I had to keep any organs of possible scientific interest, so that Dr. Mengele could examine them. Those which might interest the Anthropological Institute at Berlin-Dahlem were preserved in alcohol. These parts were specially packed to be sent through the mails. Stamped "War Material — Urgent," they were given top priority in transit.
Stranica 60 - Would it not be better to incinerate the bodies instead of burying them? Another generation might perhaps think differently about this?" Then Globocnik, "But, Gentlemen, if we should ever be succeeded by so cowardly and weak a generation that it does not understand our work, which is so good and so necessary, then, Gentlemen, the whole of National Socialism will have been in vain. On the contrary, one should bury bronze plaques [with the bodies], on which it is inscribed that it was we who had the...
Stranica 13 - In saying this, I do not characterize every Jew as inferior, as Negroes are, and I do not underestimate the greatest enemy with whom we have to fight.
Stranica 77 - War Material — Urgent," they were given top priority in transit. In the course of my work at the crematorium I dispatched an impressive number of such packages. I received, in reply, either precise scientific observations or instructions. In order to classify this correspondence I had to set up special files. The directors of the BerlinDahlem Institute always warmly thanked Dr. Mengele for this rare and precious material.
Stranica 72 - I heard that they were going to do this, and so I went up to them and told them Look here now, boys, if you are going to kill all these people, at least take the brains out so that the material could be utilized.
Stranica 105 - ... thousand. To have stuck it out, and at the same time — apart from exceptions caused by human weakness — to have remained decent fellows, that is what has made us hard.
