OPINIONS OF THE AMERICAN PRESS

ON

Freeman's History of the Norman Conquest.

REVISED AMERICAN EDITION, WITH MAPS.

Vols. I.-IV. 8vo. $16.

The North American Review, Jan, 1874.

"A new edition of Mr. Freeman's great work, cheaper and more easily handled than the former, is a gift to the student of English history which he ought to value highly. The reader, too, will be flattered to find the new title page announcing itself as introducing an American edition, a compliment to the solidity of American literary appetites which an American is bound to acknowledge." The New York Times, Dec. 24. 1873.

"The early history of England is the early history of the American people-of their religion, their language, and their laws. The full bearing of American institutions, their origin and nature, cannot be understood without a knowledge of that history, and hence its great importance to American citizens. Throughout the whole work, and down to the minutest detail. The importance and merit of Domesday Book

there is, in fact, an evident anxiety to secure truth and accuracy. were never before so distinctly exhibited. Facts which have hitherto escaped ob ervation are brought forward and made to appear in a totally new light, assuming a significance that they were never known to possess. Material is gathered from every possible available source. The smallest items are stored and estimated and the whole have been worked and woven with such consummate skill that the author of this history must henceforth take rank among the greatest of England's historians. We are not sure that the qualities he has displayed can all be found so fully developed in any other writer. He has consummate genius for literary effect; his descriptive powers are brilliant, his patience unbounded, and his strict regard for accuracy has certainly noteen surpassed by any previous historical writer.'

N. Y. World, Jan. 19, 1874.

"What we have said of him should suffice to satisfy those of our readers, if any such there be, to whom Mr Freeman's name may be new. that four volumes from his pen on such a subject as the Norman Cor quest of England, demand the serious attention of all persons who appreciate the importance of forming correct judgments on the origin and principles of free government as derived in this country from England, and developed here mainly under the influence of English laws, English literature, and English social traditions."

N. Y. Evening Mail.

"Mr. Freeman is one of the most eminent of modern historians, a thoroughly sound and able writer, whose writing is none the less admirable because it is thoroughly popular."

The Boston Transcript.

"The zealous and learned writer, who is now acknowledged as holding no second place in the roll of living English historians, has (in his former works) given proof alike of the thoroughness of his researches, of his own rare abilities, of his mastery of the field he cultivates, and of the philosophic genius with whi h he analyzes, unfolds, and summarizes his themes. These volumes are crowded with matter and enriched by episodical narratives, and speculative and judicial comments on an almost exhaustive range and fulness."

The Literary World (Boston).

His work lights up a region in English history which has heretofore been left in strange obscurity, and richly rewards the reader who perseveres in its perusal. In plenitude of information, it is not approached by any history of the Conquest; and we think we may say that no one who has not read it can have an adequate idea of a crisis in whose particulars we have, by descent, a personal concern."

The Chicago Tribune.

"Mr. Fr eman did not write to please the readers of fiction, and yet his pages are as attractive as a novel, as brilliant as those of Thierry on the same subject, while he has produced a work more critical and philosophical than either Thierry or Palgrave no small merit, when it is considered that as a work of art in the region of history, Thierry's is considered the very best that French literature can boast of. But Freeman is more than a painter. To patience, research, and carefulness he adds the scientific spirit He is a philosopher no less than an artist. He does not present th Norman Conquest as an isolated historical act. He shows us what prepared the way for it. He views it in connection with cause and effect.'

The Cincinnati Gazette.

"It is a contribution to the early history of England which fills, and is likely long to hold the same relation to its subject as Gibbon's great work has long occupied in regard to the Declining Period of the Roman Empire "

COMPARATIVE POLITICS. Six Lectures delivered at the Royal Institution, by EDWARD A. FREEMAN, M.A., D.C.L., to which is added "The Unity of History," the Rede Lecture read before the University of Cambridge, May, 1872. With Notes. 8vo, cloth.... Price $3.00 "Mr. Freeman, whose fame as an historical investigator is so well established, has borrowed from the ethnologists, philologists, and mythologists, the process of comparison, through which they have been enabled to throw so much light on the early condition of mankind, and the source of the more prominent human beliefs and customs. It is, of course, impossible within the limits of an article like this even to glance at the ground Mr. Freeman has traversed in his six lectures on Comparative Politics. We can only commend them heartily to the perusal of all students of politics and history."-The Nation. "This book is one of the most instructive, one of the wisest and fullest of thought that has appeared in historical literature."-N. Y. Times.

Fables in Song.

By OWEN MEREDITH (Robert Lord Lytton), author of "Lucile," etc. I vol. 16mo. Cabinet
Edition. Gilt top.......
..$2.00

A new volume of poems by the author of "Lucile" is sure of a wide reading. These "Fables in Song" are such as Æsop might have written if he had lived in this century and enjoyed its best culture. They cover a large range of topics, they puncture deftly many a folly and sham, they are pervaded by practical good sense, and they are written in varied measures so peculiarly attractive that they will delight persons who do not usually read poetry.

"One of the most noticeable characteristics of these poems is that in them the souls of things are revealed; and all flowers and weeds that grow seem to have a human interest for us. So, indeed, do all creatures-bird, butterfly, mole, eagle, homely barnyard fowl, lion, fox-we feel their very hearts beat."-L. C. M. in N. Y. Tribune.
