"The Digest' of Justinian is too ponderous a mass to form part of the working library of a beginner and a selection gives him an idea of the method and spirit of the original which an abridgment, moulded according to the views of the abridger, must in a great measure fail to convey. The principle of arrangement is all that could be desired. Two valuable features may be specially noticed each title has an analytical head-note by the editors, and is also provided with references to parallel passages in the Corpus juris' and in Gaius."Athenæum, Oct 22, 1881.

He succeeded in helping Narbonne to escape to England; was thrown into the society of Talleyrand, Mme. de Stael, and other emigrants of rank; and the manner in which he had borne himself in Narbonne's escape led to Bollman being asked to do the same for Lafayette. On the failure of this attempt, he went to the United States, where he was compromised in Aaron Burr's filibustering expedition; he then visited Vienna at the Congress, where he lived on terms of close intercourse with leading statesmen."- Spectator, March 26, 1881.

"His chief work, which no student of political science can afford to neglect, is an excellent illustration of the oft-quoted remark that it is impossible to approach modern political philosophy without getting a touch of Jocobinism; yet he never attempted to draw the practical consequence of the radical theories of this work. A thorough American novel in scenes and characters; the scene is chiefly laid in New Hampshire, around and upon Monadnoc Mountain, though it changes to more cultivated centres. The Boston Traveller says: "It deals with the restrained inclusiveness of New England life, it emphasizes properly the odd divisions of caste

that have spontaneously grown up here in spite of our professed democratic tendencies, it deals much with circumstances as the moulder of character, and it is pervaded to a certain extent with that atmosphere of reflected transcendentalism which no New England person can in these days wholly escape." Leader, J: D. Mary Queen of Scots in captivity. Le Blant, E. F: Etude sur les sarcophages chré

tiens antiques de la ville d'Arles. "Admirable engravings, learned introductory chapters, and lucid descriptions. M. Le Blant possesses the great advantage of not writing under the shadow of the Vatican. The fettering influence of a Church which, having committed itself to certain positions, since proved to be untenable, with regard to the date and purpose of the catacombs, the character of their contents, and the meaning of the symbols found in them, especially as indications of martyrdom, finds it difficult to retire with due regard to its claim to infallibility of judgment, is only too apparent in many recent works proceeding from Rome, or composed under its auspices." Lillie, A. Buddha and early Buddhism; with illustrations by the author.

"It needs a scholar to treat of Buddhism in these days; but Mr. Lillie gives no evidence of such qualification. He has not learnt the rudiments of scientific method, and constantly confuses resemblance with relationship. His reading, though wide, is in many respects obsolete. But his chief disability is the possession of a suicidal gift of imagination which he lets loose upon every department of learning with a recklessness that is almost as amusing as it is astounding. ... Mr. Lillle has filled the book with a large amount of interesting information. There are many pages to which no excep tion can be taken; but, again, these are followed by some preposterous theory which can only mislead the reader if he is ignorant, or enrage him if he is learned." - Sat. rev., Nov. 5, 1881.

Meissner, A. Rococo Bilder, nach Aufzeichnungen meines Grossvaters. 2e Ausg. "Meissner is a now totally forgotten literary celebrity of the last century -the author of numerous romances and plays who happened in the course of his life, to come into contact with not a few persons of note, and whose desultory reminiscences of such meetings are here strung together by his grandson. "There is the same virile force as in his 'Songs of the Sierras'; the same keen, accurate, and often minute observation of nature, so different from that around us that faithful portrayal looks like invention; the same passion, and the same glow and fervor of color. "It is somewhat remarkable to find the biographies of the greatest and of one of the weakest of Prussian mon. archis conjoined in the same volume; it is more remark. able stili the latter should be the more interesting and important of the two. The explanation consists partly in the idiosyncrasy of the biographer, partly in the cir cumstances under which the publication takes place. The veteran author is even more of a statesman than of an historian; and his ability is hown less in the portraiture of powerful characters than in disentangling the webs of diplomatic intrigue, which are often more complicated under the auspices of feeble ones. The publi cation of two memoirs ... would seem to be to remind the Prussian people of the advantages they have derived from a good understanding with Russia, and indirectly to recommend persistence in this policy."- Sat. rev., Jan. 19, 1878.

"To those who wish to study medieval Latin and medieval history in all its bearings a knowledge of the Ler Salica is indispensable. The Le Salica is prior to all the other barbarian laws with which we are acquainted, since the oldest Latin compilation dates from the time of Chlovis. Moreover the Latin texts, which alone have been preserved to us, bear unmistakable evidence of being a translation from some Frankish original. In the Latin texts a great many Frankish words occur Latinized for the purpose of compiling the law. But the chief feature of the Ler galica is the so-called Malberg Glosses, which are probably quotations from the origi nal Frankish law-book. The present is a synoptic edition which enables students to see at a glance the mutual connection, and to study with more accuracy the variations in the wording, phrases, and spelling, of the different texts."
