Abbadie, J. Chemical change in the eucharist; [tr.] by J: W. Hamersley. 1867. Allen, C: G. B. Colin Clout's calendar; record of a summer, April-October.

"Mr. Grant Allen, the Evolutionist at large,' discourses pleasantly and profitably of many of the beautiful and curious sights which the country-side affords. His sketches, or rather pictures, are gracefully and sympathetically drawn, and they reveal everywhere a keen insight into the meaning of Nature. He has been most successful in placing the results of recent researches in evolution before cultivated, but non-scientifie readers." American turf register, 1870-73. 5 v.

"Of the Becket essay Mr. Freeman said, 'When we have read Mr. Froude's account we do not know how things did happen; but we know one of the ways in which they did not happen.' The reader feels, however, that he can forgive a great deal in the volume when he turns to the 'Letters on the Oxford counter-reformation.'

After all that has been written of late on the subject of the Oxford Catholic revival, there is nothing that can compare with these letters. While describing with his usual grace and delicacy the other remarkable men who were prominent among the Tractarians, and giving to each a tribute of homage, when he comes to speak of Cardinal Newman Mr. Froude leaves upon his readers an impression almost of awe." — Athenæum, Jan. 13. "It is characteristic of English culture, just now. that the average merit of the volumes in the series of 'Ancient classics for English readers' is very much higher than the average merit of the volumes in the succeeding and corresponding series of Foreign classics for English readers.' In the earlier series there was scarcely a failure, and there were several marked successes Lord Neaves's Anthology,' for instance, and Si Theodore (then Mr.) Martin's Horace.' In Mrs. Oliphant's series there is scarcely one thoroughly well-done volume. Even Mrs. Thackeray's Mme. de Sévigné,' clever and easy as it is,confesses its own superficiality; and some of them notably those on 'Molière' and on Corneille and Racine,' are remarkably ill-done." - Critic, Mar. 17. Takizava-Bakin. Okoma, roman japonais illustré par Félix Regamey d'après le texte de Bakin et les dessins de Chiguenoi.

"In philosophy we are told that Takasivi was a disciple of Confucius. As a novelist, however, he was fully conscious of the value of the supernatural; and as su pernaturalism was an element in the religion of Buddha, he was fond of writing Buddhist stories. In these he seems to have developed the dogmas of the creed as conscientiously and relentlessly as George Elliot unfolded the theories of positivisin, or Balzac the principles and deductions of physiology. The story is a romantic exposition of cause and effect, as full of incident and complication as a novel of Boisgobey. M. Régamey has made a pleasant picture of Takasivi in his study, with a view of Fuji in the distance, wringing his hands and apparently enduring great mental agony. One almost hopes, after reading Okoma that his sufferings are the result of an attempt to understand the plot of his own novel. M. Regamey is an accomplished craftsman; he has succeeded in catching not a little of the right Japanese spirit."— Saturday rev., Mar. 3. Talleyrand Périgord, C: M. de, prince de Bénévent. VFF•D26E "It is to be regretted that the author should have put the very best that exists of his work into a book which as a whole is dull and inartistic." Athenæum, Feb. 3. "A painful book, unrelieved gloom. This writer has been called the French Dickens;' but it is certain that Boz' would never have become so popular as he was, if he had given himself to the morbid studies in which Daudet delights. L'évangéliste' tells a story of reli gious zeal and intolerance, so unnatural, so depressing and subversive of common human feeling, that the reader's patience is put to the test on every page." — American, Mar. 7.

"Mr. Daudet's latest novel will add nothing to his literary glory. Of late years he has made the mistake of trying to give a political or social interest to his novels, to the neglect of his happiest vein, the portrayal of the habits and feelings of the small bourgeoisie and the peoIn 'L'evangéliste' he has tried to portray the ple. Protestant world; but it is an unknown one to him, and the information he has been able to collect about it has been scanty and of too purely external a nature to prevent him from falling into material as well as more serious moral inaccuracies.
