Those who have become ac quainted with Dr. Martineau's academical lectures will be struck with the great resemblance between the doctrines therein enunciated and those set forth in Dr. Pressensé's book. Dr. Pressensé's presentation of his views is very sketchy and imperfect, compared with Dr. Martineau's far more full and searching treatment, and we miss in the literary style of the former the singular artistic grace which lends a charm to Dr. Martineau's most abstruse philosophizings." - Modern rev., Apr. Shelley, P. B. Poems; selected and arr.
Brooke. 1880.

by S. A. VEP SH4P "The lovers of Shelley owe much to Mr. Stopford Brooke for the preliminary essay to this little volume of selections, -an essay full of power and true apprecia. tion of Shelley's poetry. Nothing can be better than what Mr. Brooke says of Shelley's passion for indefiniteness, and of his passion for changefulness." — Spectator, July 24, 1880.

Stepniak, pseud. Underground Russia; revoluary profiles and sketches from life; with preface by P. Lavroff; tr. from the Italian. "Its author was formerly the editor of the revolutionary journal secretly printed in St. Petersburg, Zemlya i volya,' Land and liberty'; the writer of the preface is M. Lavrof, who used to edit in London, the Russian periodical Upered,' or 'Fowards,' and who was not long ago expelled from France in company with Mlle. Vera Zasulich. The statements which they make are of course party statements, and must be considered with caution. But they may at least be accepted as genuine expressions of the feelings which actuate the Russian revolutionists, and as trustworthy exponents of the ends and aims which those political fanatics have in view." Sat. rev., Aug. 12, 1882.

"Practically the only things of their kind in existence; not less brilliant than they are authoritative; they are studies and studies from the life of a political movement that is perhaps the most mysterious and romantic the world has ever known; and no more to be passed over by the general reader than they are to be neglected by the student." "A remarkable study of modern French life made by an American author."— Boston Sat, gazette, Apr. 21. "A literary book, to be prized by those who do not demand in a novel vitality, humor, realism, or power, if only it possesses refinement, finish, philosophy, and style. It is a compilation of 'good things' not witty or even humorous things, but wise, tender, and beautiful things. Its great fault is the lack of individuality in its setting and its characters. The setting is charming, but it is not what it professes to be; the characters are well-bred and interesting, but they are all alike. Prof. Hardy has drawn excellent people, but he has not drawn them excellently. They are merely mouth-pieces for his own admirable thoughts." Critic, Apr. 26. Hare, A: J: C. "The accounts hitherto published of this war have been almost entirely from the Chilian side, Mr. Markham has determined to write a history from the Peruvian side. He was well fitted for the task by former residence in the country, by familiarity with its language and people, and by study of their customs and habits for nearly thirty years. He is, in fact, a well-known authority on Peru. The book is filled with epithets rather than calm judgments, and is so violently partisan as to be unworthy credence. It might well have been written by a native Peruvian; and, if nothing more can be said on their side of the case, it will only confirm the impression which has been hitherto received, that the Chilians gained the victory because they were the superior race." It is indeed only a fragment in the hand-writing of her secretary Nau, and it is not written in Mary's name, but in the style of an independent history. There can, however, be no reas onable doubt that it was composed entirely from information supplied by herself at the time the author was in her service; and this being so, whatever view may be taken of Mary's character, it is clearly impossible to neglect what she says in her own defence. Yet, strange to say, this remarkable fragment has existed for nearly three centuries in what was almost all along the best known and the most accessible collection of miss. in the whole kingdom, namely the Cottonian Library, and no one until within the last few years took the trouble to decipher it and tell the world what was in it. The book contains other materials bearing upon the subject from the archives of the Vatican; and the information thus brought together is further elucidated in a lengthy bu: readable and interesting introduction, such as we might be sure to have from a veteran student of English and Scottish history like Father Stevenson." — Athenæum, Apr. 21.
