Chelsea householder, A. (Leis. hour ser.) VC415 "The hero is big and rough and set in his way,' not a happy man, and rather puzzled as to himself; one of those persons who have a natural bent toward making mistakes, and a natural recognition of them after they are made; who, in short, like the round peg in the square hole, are out of their place in the world, and feel keenly the puzzles and the tangles of life. We have not for a long time met, in or out of a book, a girl who pleased us as much as Muriel,' with her frankness, her clear good sense, her charm of womanhoood and ladyhood. The scenery, too, is admirable. There is real sun in the pages, and fresh air, the genuine sense and flavor of Nature, apart from the human interest which in its way is equally good."― Lit. world, May 5. Cherbuliez, V. (pseud. G. "The book has plainly been a labor of love-a love which spared no pains, and thought no trouble too great. Mr. Dobson's extraordinary knowledge of the 18th cen tury a knowledge as broad as it is minute has been revealed to us before, but never has it been seen to such advantage as in this small volume. There is no. where in these pages any taint of the book-maker, and nowhere is the slightest suspicion aroused that the author had to read up his subject. On the contrary, he speaks out of the abundance of knowledge. For the first time we have now a plain statement of the chief facts in Fielding's life, set free from all the cloudy legend which clusters about famous names. The constant paper warfare with the Cibbers is now for the first time fully set forth." Critic, May 5.

Dublin translations into Greek and Latin verse. (Dublin Univ. Press ser.) "When once the student of the classical languages has not merely assented to, but thoroughly realized, the fact that works written in them are literature and not puzzles, he begins to be intolerant of imitations. No doubt there is a certain satisfaction in seeing a difficulty more or less successfully grappled with, or sometimes the phrase of an English writer rendered into the very words which we instinctively feel that a Greek or Ro. man must have used if he had wished to express the same idea. It is curious, too, that just as one often learns for the first time the secret of another person's peculiarities of speech or gesture by seeing some clever mimic take him off, so one learns the trick of Ciceronian or Thucydidean prose more quickly from the imitation of modern writers than by the study of the original, the modern writer, by a little over accentuating the special features of his model's style, fixes them more firmly in the student's mind." - -Athenæum, Apr. 14.

"There is little doubt who has the lion's share in the honours of this anthology. Prof. Tyrrell, well known as an editor and critic of classical texts, has been well aided by his colleagues, but his own work stands clearly at the head.
