Sandabad. Deux rédactions du roman des sept sages, pub. par G. Paris. 1876. VFL-SA5

Sandeau, L. S. J., d. Apr. 24, 1883.

"It is very difficult to say whom he has left behind who is his equal or his heir in respect of French of the less florid sort, perfectly pure of 'argot,' aiming at a subdued and sober rather than at a gay and varied col· ouring, but thoroughly expressive, flexible, polished and easy. To have been the novelist of virtue, and not dull; the devotee of morality, and yet an excellent artist, these are M. Sandeau's just and rare titles to fame and remembrance." Saturday review, Apr. 28.

"His first independent work of importance was 'Madame de Sommerville,' 1834, and from that time till 1855 hardly a year passed without at least one novel, and often two, from him. Of these the most remarkable were 'Marianna,' 1839, a study of ill-fated passion which has much power; 'Le docteur Herbeau,'1841, one of the most popular of his works in France, perhaps because it contains an impossible Englishman; Mademoiselle de Ke. rouare,' 1842, a short tale of exquisite pathos and delicacy; Catherine' a village story deserving the same epithets, but happier in its termination, and displaying a considerable faculty of humour; Mademoiselle de la Seiglière,' also dramatized, 1848, which is perhaps in the general estimation his master-piece; 'Madeline,' same year, and La chasse au roman,' 1850, two moral tales, in which the moral most emphatically does not bite nor in any way spoil the art; and 'Sacs et parchemins, '1851, also a great favorite in France. No one has put more forcibly or dramatically the contact and contrast of the old world of aristocratic caste and prejudice with the new world of wealth and equality. No French novelist (without a single exception) has avoided making immorality interesting with such a complete simultaneous avoidance of the danger of making his books uninteresting. None not even his early companion [George Sand] - has written in a purer style, and scarcely any one has constructed more workmanlike plots." -Athenæum, Apr. 28.

"A handbook for the cultivated traveller in Italy, in dicates to him a frame of mind by which he may make his Italian rambles most profitable. It is full of suggestions how aesthetic and intellectual impressions may be garnered by lending oneself to passing moods, intensifying their pictorial effects, and allowing the silent work of fancy to have its full imaginative force."-. "The introduction, which is scholarly and laborious in the highest degree, contains dissertations on the metre and language of Babrius, on the history of the Greek fable, and on the history of the text. It may be read with interest by the ordinary classical scholar. We must specially commend Mr. Whymper's illustrations, while the fact that the author has taken counsel with Mr. J. E. Harting is a suflicient warrant for the trustworthiness of the natural history." — M. G. Watkins in the Academy, Jan. 20.

Dr.

Munger, T. T. The freedom of faith; [sermons]. "What is acceptable in the pulpit is seldom acceptable in the silence of quiet reading. Mr. Beecher is a notable instance of one whose sermons are unreadable. Mr. Spurgeon is another. Dr. Talmage is another. Dr. John Hall is another. ... On the other hand, Robertson's sermons are as warm with fervor as they were the moment the words fell from the preacher's lips. Brooks's sermons are of the sort that live in the printed page, because they are freighted with strong convictions, and express the integrity of the preacher's thoughts and experience. Dr. Bushnell's sermons are as fresh and strong to-day as they were a quarter of a century ago. Mozley's sermons, though falling on unapreciative ears at Oxford, because the preacher lacked the graces of oratory, have steadily grown upon the minds of men as perhaps the greatest sermons of the century. Newman's discourses have retained their vitality through all the vagaries of belief entertained by their author, and express more thoroughly the romance of the religious belief, the union of poetic feeling with intense convictions, than any preachments ever put on paper before. It is to this class of sermons that the discourse in Mr. Munger's Freedom of faith' belongs. Their purpose is chiefly ethical."

"Of special interest are 'The settlement of German. town,' David Rittenhouse,' Henry Armitt Brown,' 'Charles F: Taylor,' Christopher Dock,' and 'Six weeks in uniform.' The last is an account of Mr. Pennypacker's personal experiences of military life during the Gettysburg campaign, and was written in the fall of 1863, while the impressions of that interesting period were still vivid. It is so personal in its nature that it has been published with much reluctance and only at the request of students of the history of the Rebellion. It gives in detail the movements of the 26th P. V. M. which have hitherto, in all published accounts, been passed with the briefest mention. As this was the first regiment to engage Lee's army in Pennsylvania, Mr. Pennypacker's sketch is necessary to a complete knowledge of that most important battle of the war."- Boston transcript, May 29.

"Bright rather than brilliant, and more valuable for the truth it tells than for humorous painting. The humor is always a subordinate thing; his main design is to be descriptive, critical, and didactic.
