The nearest approach to it in the one aspect is some collection of French memoirs; and in the other the closest parallel is such a conception of an old Indian officer as the Colonel Newcome' of Thackeray.

...

Such a man under a bureaucracy was almost sure to go wrong. Lacking not only the courtier's glosing tongue, but even ordinary caution and worldly wisdom, he was ever ready to sacrifice himself, and the world willingly accepted the sacrifice." - A. H. Keane in the Academy, Apr. 19.

"A valuable contribution to the history of the Edwards family. Through a number of original records and documents never before made public, the author is enabled to throw considerable light upon the antecedents of Jonathan Edwards and his father, Timothy Edwards. The extracts from letters, account-books, deeds, etc., given in the original language, also serve to give a more correct idea than hitherto obtained of the ways and habits of this period in New England history. Many of Mr. Edward's sermons are also given. Illus. trated with a view of the Grant mansion, and fac-similes of Mr. Edward's sermons, old documents, etc."

ter is beyond the reach of criticism, but because he has left behind him substantial proofs of power and origi nality. ... Mr. Thomson was possessed by an imagi nation naturally strong and fruitful which an early sorrow and its consequences inspired with an ever gloom. ier despair. His finest poems, the Doom of a city,' The city of awful night,'The deliverer,' and most of all, the terrible but splendid 'Insomnia,' bear witness to this overpowering gloom. In the latter poem the command of language is extraordinary. He was a bold and outspoken radical and free thinker, but we do not think that the specimens of political verse, with the exception of Despotism tempered by dynamite' merit approval." Titcomb, J. H., Bp. of Rangoon. Short chapters on Buddhism past and present.

"Bishop Titcomb's little manual supplies a want without aiming at the completeness of the longer treatises on the subject; it gives in a clear form the main points of likeness and contrast between the religions of the East and West. Closer inspection reveals that the similarities are as a rule superficial, the contrasts essential and deep-rooted. All these harmonics and contrasts are clearly brought out by Bishop Titcomb, somewhat coloured of course by his faith and his office, but set down in no spirit of unfairness, nor with any want of sympathy with the religion of the millions of human beings by whom he is surrounded."- Saturday review, Apr. 5.

Didon, père, Dominican. Les Allemands. AG-D56

"Père Didon is a Dominican monk whose fame as a preacher has been growing ever since 1872, when his eloquence first began to be remarked at Marseilles and in the South, where he preached in the cause of the national subscription for the payment of the ransom to the Prussians. Three years ago his Lenten lectures in Paris created great sensation; he astonished by his boldness in treating burning questions in the pulpit, and his liberalism and polemical audacity won him a popu larity that offended his spiritual superiors, who exiled him for a year from France. His forced retreat being at length at an end, he went to Germany, entered himself as a student at Berlin, and passed a year amongst the Germans, observing, comparing, and in short living the life of the students. The result is Les Allemands,' really the first book written since the war in which a Frenchman has studied the enemy impartially, intelli gently, and with the desire to discover the secret of his qualities."- - Theodore Child in the American, Mar. 22. - Maxime Gaucher in Rev. pol. et lit., 2 fév.

"There is no living French critic who is his superior in 'finesse,' in range of appreciation, in freedom from preju dice, and from woodenness. On Béranger he seems to us a little severe, but this very severity is instructive. To take a curiously different, yet parallel instance, the attitude of all the most accomplished French critics towards Béranger has much of the same characteristies to an Englishman's eye which Frenchmen seem to see in the attitude of some accomplished English critics towards Byron. In both cases the foreigner excuses occasional bad taste, platitude, and conventionality more easily than the native." - Saturday review, Mar. 8.
