BOOKS OF THE MONTH. WALTER SCOTT'S JOURNAL.* 255 The publication of Sir Walter Scott's Journal is the literary event of the year. Lockhart, to be sure, drew on it copiously in his Life of Scott, but many reasons prevented him from publishing the Diary entire: it was too soon after Scott's death, and the pages contained too many references to living persons. Now, after a lapse of more than fifty years, Mr. David Douglas takes up the work and gives us the Journal as Scott left it; and his carefully annotated edition will be read by thousands to whom Lockhart's ten volumes are inaccessible. To these readers the Journal will be like a new book by the "Author of Wa verley," and one not less interesting certainly than one of the novels of that master hand. a |
