Privately reprinted from

Mémoires pour l'histoire des sciences et des beaux-arts, Trévoux, août 1727, article lxxvi" See Colomb de Batines, i, p. 461.

The author aims to prove that the Commedia was composed by a follower of Wichif about the end of the 15th century.

Apart from the ludicrous weakness or falsity of these socalled arguments, did it never occur to a clever and learned man, as Hardouin certainly was, that (1) many Mss. of the Divina commedia much earlier than 1400 actually exist: and (2) that several commentaries were written in the course of the fourteenth century upon the supposed non-existent poem?"— Moore, Dante and his early biographers, p. 180.
