INDEX OF SUBJECTS.

In its form this Index is a compromise between the subject references of library catalogues, determined by rigid bibliographical rules, and the more elastic styles used for indexing books in general. The names of St. Augustine, Cicero, Virgil, and the like, are given in their brief English forms and not in the full classical forms one would look for in the body of a bibliographical catalogue.

It has not been thought worth while to refer to all the poems written on Dante. They are only too numer ous and the mere names of their authors would fill half a dozen pages. References to poems and dramas will, however, be found under such headings as Beatrice, Francesca, Pia, Ugolino, etc. References to titles in the Supplement are distinguished by an asterisk (*).
