POETRY.

[ocr errors]

NOTE-Readers of Dante ought to begin with
Dr. Hettinger's work, so as to get a true idea
of the poem; then Ozanan's work, and the
valuable hints of Brother Azarias (P. F. Mul-
lany) on Dante, in his "Phases of thought
and criticism; also on "How to read
Dante," in "Books and reading," by same
author.
NOTE-Aubrey de Vere is unquestionably one
of the greatest poets of this century. Pro-
fessor Maurice Egan says of him: "No
dramatic writer of the last two centuries has
come so near Shakespeare as Aubrey de
Vere." (From list of Cath. books, Comp.
by Rev. J. O'Donovan.)
