The following report and resolution were received from the Board of Education, relative to a renewal of the lease of premises at No. 186 Chrystie street, Borough of Manhattan:

To the Board of Education:

The Committee on Buildings respectfully reports that the lease of the premises No. 186 Chrystie street, occupied as an annex to Public School 35, Borough of Manhattan, will expire January 18, 1905.

The City Superintendent states that the same should be renewed for another year, and the Departments of Health and Buildings certify that the sanitary and structural conditions thereat are satisfactory.

The lessor demands an annual rental of $480, instead of $360, the present rental, and refuses to grant any further privilege of renewal. As the premises are absolutely necessary, your Committee has deemed it expedient to accept these terms.

The following resolution is submitted for adoption:

Resolved, That the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund be and they hereby are requested to authorize a renewal of the lease of the premises No. 186 Chrystie street, occupied as an annex to Public School 35, Borough of Manhattan, for a period from January 18, 1905, to July 1, 1905, at an annual rental of $480, otherwise on the same terms and conditions as contained in the existing lease. Owner, Mrs. Isidor Straus, No. 2745 Broadway. ·

In connection therewith the Comptroller presented the following report and offered the following resolution:

Hon. EDWARD M. GROUT, Comptroller:

NOVEMBER 29, 1904.

SIR-The Board of Education at a meeting held on November 23, 1904, adopted the following resolution:

64

"Resolved, That the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund be and they hereby are requested to authorize a renewal of the lease of the premises No. 186 Chrystie street, “occupied as an annex to Public School 35, Borough of Manhattan, for a period from “January 18, 1905, to July 1, 1905, at an annual rental of $480, otherwise on the same terms and conditions as contained in the existing lease. Owner, Mrs. Isidor Straus, "No. 2745 Broadway."

The request for a renewal is for a period from January 18, 1905, to July 1, 1905. The Department of Buildings reports the property suitable for school purposes, as does also the Board of Health, with the exception that a leader on the front of the house is defective and requires repairing.

The rent which the City pays for the property under the present existing lease is $360 annually. After an interview with Mrs. Isidor Straus, the owner of the premises, she has consented to take the same rent for the short period of the lease, as is paid by the City under the present existing lease, instead of $480, as mentioned in the resolution of the Board of Education. I would therefore respectfully recommend that the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund approve of the request of the Board of Education and authorize a renewal of the lease of the premises for a period from January 18, 1905, to July 1, 1905, at an annual rental of $360, otherwise upon the same terms and conditions as are contained in the present existing lease. Mrs. Isidor Straus, lessor. Respectfully submitted for approval,

MORTIMER J. BROWN,

Appraiser of Real Estate in Charge of Bureau.

Resolved, That the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund hereby approve of and consent to the execution, by the Board of Education, of a renewal of the lease to the City from Mrs. Isador Straus, of the parlor floor of premises No. 186 Chrystie street, Borough of Manhattan, for a period from January 18 to July 1, 1905, at a rental at the rate of three hundred and sixty dollars ($360) per annum, payable quarterly, otherwise upon the same terms and conditions as contained in the existing lease; the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund deeming the said rent fair and reasonable and that it would be for the interests of the City that such lease be made.

The report was accepted and the resolution unanimously adopted.
