"Books are yours,

Within whose silent chambers treasure lies
Preserved from age to age; more precious far
Than that accumulated store of gold
And Orient gems which, for a day of need,
The Sultan hides deep in ancestral tombs.
These hoards of truth you can unlock at will."

PREFATORY NOTE.

This Catalogue is compiled on the dictionary system, i.e., all the entries are arranged in one continuous series in strict alphabetical order. By means of this arrangement a reader can at a glance have an answer to one or other of the following questions: (1) Does the Library contain a work by a known author, e.g., Matthew Arnold's Friendship's garland"? (2) What of a known author's works does it contain, e.g., what other works of Arnold's besides his "Friendship's garland"? (3) Does it contain a work, the title of which is known, but its author's name is unknown or forgotten, e.g., "The Return of the Native?" (4) Has it a book or books dealing with a particular subject, e.g., Education? This simple form of catalogue is, in my opinion, the one best calculated to meet the multifarious requirements of a large body of readers drawn from all classes of the community.

Special features of the Catalogue are these: When a title is obscure or misleading, a small explanatory note has been added to indicate the nature or scope of the work. A number of volumes have been analysed and the contents entered under the various headings of which they treat. For proof of what has been done in this respect see the entries under Carlyle, Browning, or George Eliot. Again, readers whose reading or research lies in a particular direction will find under the various headings references to other headings which are synonymous or inter-related. Works in Dutch, French and German will be found grouped together under the name of the language. Under the names of the more eminent Authors or Celebrities will be found the date of birth and death. In the case of joint authors, the work is entered under the name of the Author first mentioned in the title page with a cross reference from the other Author. Pseudonymous works are entered under the pseudonym, except when an Author has written both under pseudonym and real name. For some modern pseudonyms, with the real names, see Appendix A,

As indicated, this work treats of the senior section only—a separate library and catalogue for Juveniles will be prepared at a later date. This explains why well-known books such as "Robinson Crusoe " or "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" are omitted from this collection. On the other hand, a number of the books in the Reference Library are included and marked by the letter R. Certain volumes in the Reference Library may be borrowed for home reading on special application being made. References have been made also to the Seymour Memorial Library, a separate catalogue of which is now in preparation.

So far as the collection of books is concerned, the Committee fully realize that hundreds of volumes are omitted that certainly have a claim to the shelves of every Public Library. In this respect, however, it is only necessary to bear in mind that the Johannesburg Public Library is in the day of small things, and that a collection of books likely to satisfy the needs and requirements of all classes of a large community is the product of a slow and gradual growth.

I desire gratefully to acknowledge the help I have received from each of the assistants according to their several capacities, and in particular to refer to the zealous assistance and assiduity of Mr. J. Smith and Mr. D. Niven. I desire also to publicly express my indebtedness to Dr. J. H. Hertz, Mr. Richard Goldmann and Mrs. Napier for valuable hints and suggestions in the selection of books. I have also to acknowledge the promptitude and attention of the Printer and in particular to refer to the fact, unique almost in a work of this size, that by keeping the whole work in type almost till the moment of going to press, he enabled me to insert in its proper place every book added to the Library during the compilation of the catalogue.

In conclusion: In the preparation of a work such as the present, carried on alongside of the ordinary work of the Library, it is almost impossible to exclude error. I have taken great pains to secure accuracy, but, notwithstanding, mistakes have crept in. I feel sure. however, they will be readily pardoned by all who have any experience of the kind or give thought to the subject. I should like to point out also that some 800 to 1,000 volumes were ordered by the Committee after the MSS. was prepared for the Press. The order

was sent to England, and consequently I was obliged to catalogue the books from advertisements. This is always a dangerous procedure, and the risks of error are obvious. On the other hand, if inaccuracies have crept in as a result, they will probably be thought a matter of small importance compared with the increased convenience of having the Catalogue, as far as possible, up-to-date.

For the improvement of future editions or supplements my thanks will be gratefully rendered to all who may discover errors worth pointing out.
