PREFACE.

THESE Sermons were not preached in the order in which they appear. Indeed the last was delivered some years ago, under a former appointment to the office of Select Preacher. Their present arrangement may serve to present the mystery of the faith in its relation to some points in the character, the duty, the danger, and the destiny of man.

The first Sermon asserts the mystery itself, according to "the witness of God which He hath testified of His Son ;" a witness which is not only general as to the fact that Jesus Christ is come, but articulate and distinct as to how He is come and why He is come. Only when articulate and distinct can it satisfy our wants; and I am glad to borrow the title of the Sermons as a whole from the text which insists on that distinctness.

The other Sermons shew something of the bearing of this witness of God upon the following subjects:-godliness, as the highest form of our character; worship of God, as the acknowledgment, and first act, of our duty; contact with
