Ranke, F. L. von. History of the Latin and Teutonic nations, 1494-1514; tr. by P. A. Ashworth. 1887.

Reid, Capt. M. No quarter. 1888. 3 v.

"A rattling historical novel after the G. P. R. James and Harrison Ainsworth type, may be enjoyed for its racy delineations of character and scenery." - G. Barnett Smith in the Academy, Dec. 3, 1887.

Renan, E. Histoire du peuple d'Israel. T. 2. - History of the people of Israel, till the time of King David.

"Its literary and historical characteristics have the engaging uniformity of all the author's work. As always, M. Renan serenely proceeds through a series of events of which, except in the rarest instances, there is record in but a single set of documents, and authenticates this and discredits that autocratically. ... Cer. tainly no process so curious as his has ever been dignified yet by the name of 'history 'even in that department of human folly which calls itself Biblical criticism.". Sat. rev., Jan. 12.

Robertson, J: M. Essays toward a critical method. 1879.

Robinson, B: C. Bench and bar; reminiscences of one of the last of an ancient race.

"A capital specimen of the lighter sort of memoirs. It is a record of events and incidents, which has been written chiefly as an amusement to the author. Expe. rience of the world, natural good taste, a cheerful disposition, and a nice sense of humour have furnished the writer with all that is wanted to make an entertaining volume. He has known exactly what to avoid, and a good memory and a keen perception have enabled him to give some excellent new stories, aad to tell them well." Athenæum, June 29.

Romilly, H. H. From my verandah in New Guinea; sketches and traditions; with introd. by A. Lang.

"In 1881, Mr. Romilly was sent from Fiji to visit and report upon various groups of islands, and, among other places he proceeded to New Guinea. ... We are introduced to many specimens of Papuan folklore. These and their religious beliefs and superstitious observances are much discussed by the author, and by Mr. Lang in his introduction. ... Mr. Romilly writes hopefully of the possible prospect in store for New Guinea."- Sat. rev., June 8.

"The arch little preface does not carry off the very poor stuff which follows it."- Athenæum,, July 27.

"In conclusion, Mrs. Stevenson remarked parenthetically, as it were: 'I notice that some of the papers are saying that that story by Mr. Osborne, The wrong box,' is largely Mr. Stevenson's. Now that is not the case. The story is really the work of Mr. Osborne. Only, to use a common phrase, Mr. Osborne got Mr. Stevenson to look it over for him and put what he called a little pepper' into it. That is all that Mr. Stevenson had to do with it. Mr. Osborne will be with Mr. Stevenson till the conclusion of the trip, and intends devoting himself entirely to literature.""" Strong, Rev. J. Werner, J. R. Visit to Stanley's rear-guard at Maj. Barttelot's camp on the Aruhwini; with an account of river-life on the Congo. "Mr. Werner's clear, modest, and entertaining secount of his experiences on the Congo, between Stanley Pool and Stanley Falls, makes us tolerably familiar with the river, the people who dwell on its banks, and the Arabs who are killing and burning out the natives on its upper reaches. He was ever voyaging up and down, or penetrating into some affluent with his tiny lightdraught steamer. Thus his opportunities for observation were plentiful, and we get a series of lightly sketched pictures of things and persons which help us to understand the new country, and the courageous men of several nationalities who are giving their health and lives to make a broad way across Africa."- Spectator, July 13.

"In previous reviews we have endeavored to appland his enthusiasm and recognize the merits of his style, while deprecating a carelessness of statement, and a tendency to occasional gross inaccuracy, which spoil much of his work for thorough naturalists. In the present work the pleasant diction and the hearty enthusiasm are the same, and previous criticism seems to have had the effect of rendering him somewhat more careful." Nation, Aug. 15.

Ashe, R. P. Two kings of Uganda; or, Life by the shores of Victoria Nyanza; an account of a residence of six years in eastern equatorial Africa.

"A record of missionary enterprise. The good missionary's experiences are chiefly those of blood and slaughter which it may be necessary to recall, but which are inexpressibly painful to read about. The fluency of Mr. Ashe's religious convictions is untinetured with any alloy of bigotry and narrow-mindedness." - Sat. rec., July 13.

"M. Auguste Blondel, auquel on devait déjà une excellente étude sur Töpffer, rappelle quelquefois, par sa grâce et sa finesse, le célèbre auteur genevois. Mais avant tout il est original, soit qu'il se livre au courant de sa fantaisie, comme dans L'ame des choses' qui sert de titre à tout le recueil, Saint-Ferréol,' la 'Double vie,' soit qu'il serre des près la réalité, comme dans les touchants récits; 'Louise,' 'Sous l'acacia,' etc., etc." — E. Brownell, W. C. French traits; an essay in com

parative criticism.

"The work not only of an acute observer and critic, but of one philosophically bent, who, not satisfied with looking at the surface of things French, probes their very depth, ever seeking the cause hidden behind the effect. Social instinct,' the first of the nine headings under which Mr. Brownell particularizes the French traits is made, by ingenious and sometimes paradoxical reasoning, to explain the virtues, attenuate the faults, and justify the idiosyncracies of the French people. After reading Mr. Brownell's French traits,' one will be very apt to lose some of the prejudices and preconceived opinions he has hitherto entertained. He will, moreover, find this book very pleasant reading; while suggestive of much thought, it is bright, discursive, full of fresh ideas, and gives evidence not only of the author's thorough knowledge of his subject, but of his familiarity with the literature and art of the three countries compared England, France, and the United States." Nation, July 28.

Carey, R. N. The search for Basil Lyndhurst. The details of the book are better than the general scheme." G: Saintsbury in the Academy, July 20. Chaucer, G. The legend of good women; ed. by W. W. Skeat. (Clarendon press ser.) "Professor Skeat is re-awakening the gratitude of all students of Middle English and lovers of its great poet by a fresh gift, distinguished by all the excellent qualities of its predecessor. His new volume is not so large nor so varied in its contents as that containing the Mi. nor poems,' nor does it offer to Professor Skeat's ingenuity and erudition nearly so many knotty points for discussion and explanation. Yet the position of the Legend' in the list of Chaucer's works is one of greatest importance. Important as the Legend' is, it has hitherto fared badly at the hands of editors. Every. one who cares for Chaucer must possess himself of this work, and no one who possesses it can be otherwise than grateful to the editor."— Alfred W. Pollard in the Academy, Aug. 17.

A monograph on Zermatt is a curious piece of minute history, and not too minutely told for so typical a mountaineer. ing centre. Mr. Coolidge's book is an indispensable addition to every collection of Alpine literature, and an almost indispensable companion to a set of the Alpine journal.'" Sat. rev., Aug. 17.

"As a fresh revelation of the state of the French court during the Maintenon règime and the Regency, they form a supplement to the memoirs of Saint Simon little short of invaluable; while the naïve personality of the writer, her keenness of perception, the piquancy of her style, and especially the fact that even after a long life spent among them, the persons of whom she writes remained to her persons of an alien race, confer upon her sketches an attraction which could be satisfactorily illustrated only by extracts far more copious than the limits of our space will permit.” — Athenium, Aug. 10. Etat militaire de France, 1760, 80. 2 v. Fitzgerald, E: Letters and literary remains; ed. by W: A. Wright. 3 v.

"The letters show Fitzgerald as critic, philosopher, poet, humourest. And as he was always a mighty reader, as well as a musician and a connoisseur, every page of this volume contains some criticism of poet or prose writer, old or new, from Homer to the Corn-Law Rhymer, and from Thucydides to Athanasius Gasker. How good it all is! how exactly the man himself, whose most perverse judgments are nevertheless valuable they ring so true. We venture to prophesy that Fitzgerald fifty years hence will be better remembered as the Translator of Omar' than by the matchless translation itself, but best of all by these letters.' suite à l'hist. de la Restauration, 1830-48. Tome 1.

E. A. in Le livre, 10 avr. Hérisson, M. d'I., comte d'.

Lightfoot, J. B., Bp. of Durham. M. M. Perrens belongs to none of them. There is also the special pleader, the painter of manners, the picturesque historian. M. Perrens is witty and well-informed, indiffer. ent, and more inclined to epigrams than adjectives. On every page there are traces of a vast erudition. And yet, though he works seriously no one could be less serious than M. Perrens. He regards the elaborate spectacle which he has evoked with an eye frankly irreverent, amused, insouciant." His brilliant gossip of 600 pages is careless of the dignity of history. He combines his palæography with a light-hearted and amiable gaiety unafraid of erudition. And yet, M. Perrens is an historians' historian. We have already said that he is not picturesque.' What interests him in the past is not a certain figure, a certain pageant, a certain emotional or heroic crisis; it is the tendency and development of states, the details of intrigue and diplomacy. the hundred little facts which go to prove how such a state of things could come to be." "Très consciencieuse. L'auteur a trouvé un grand nombre de détails et de documents sur le célèbre Girondin. "This magnificently illustrated monograph contains an interesting description of the collection of prehistorie objects which have been dug up by three German men of science during a prolonged residence for purposes of research in Columbia and other parts of Central Amer. ica. ... The chromo-lithographic plates, which form the most important part of this costly work, are executed with most remarkable skill, and have an artistic merit which in some cases seems almost too good for such inartistic subjects. Both in form and colour the most minute accuracy seems to be attained, and, with such illustrations as these it becomes almost needless for the student to examine the original objects." Sat. res. "He does not hesitate to supplement Darwin's illus trations with further facts, nor even to indicate the very few points in which he differs from some of the appli cations of the theory; but the book as a whole may be taken as a résumé of the volumes in which Darwin propounded and illustrated the doctrine which goes by his name. Mr. Wallace's volume may be taken as a faithful exposition of what Darwin meant. It is writ ten with perfect clearness, with a simple beauty and attractiveness of style not common to scientific works, with a dignity and freedom from anything like personal bitterness worthy of Darwin himself, and with an orderliness and completeness that must render misconceptions impossible.". - Sat., rev., June 1.
