"A treasury of information, not so much, however, about the Decameron,' as about Panchatantra, the Seven wise masters, Dolopathos, the story of three rings, every celebrated legend of which any trace, however small, is to be discovered in Boccacio. In fact, Boccacio himself is frquently almost invisible amid the opulence of illustration. This luxuriance of detail, however, renders the work very amusing; and it might almost serve as a guide to the intricate ramifications of those popular fictions which have obtained universal currency." Saturday rec., Jan. 19, 1884.

- G. "It is open to doubt if it has been Mr. Pater's intention to offer an apology for the higher epicurianism; possibly he has merely endeavored to trace the develop ment of a cultured mind in a period that bears no slight resemblance to our own. If, however, it has been his intention to demonstrate the futility of either Epicurian or Stoic philosophy, and to show that Christianity is alone in any sense really responsive to man's deepest aspirations, then he has been only very partially success. ful. Indubitably he has in Marius' skilfully, and without precipitation, disclosed the lees that abide in the bottom of the cup that contains the mellow wine of the wis dom of Epicurus; but at most he vaguely suggests that in its place, if we care to partake thereof, there is a draught of more vivifying essence, of more estimable flavor yet of the permanency of whose subtle regenerative quality he can say, as he knows, nothing. In a word, the mental history of Marius will hardly help any one in the same plight as was Marius himself after all his years of careful introspection, anxious thought, and vague expectancy. There is no living writer who excels Mr. Pater in grace of style. He does not indulge in passages of sustained eloquence, but every word he writes is calculated to be the best word in that place, to have its full significance brought out." - Athenæum, Feb. 28.

"These Writings by the way' seem to be a product of the true Carlylian spirit, — in other words, their au thor has written them, not to order, or against time, but because he has something to say. The longer essays, such as Thomas Carlyle,'' A horoscope of Britian, Sir Isaac Newton,' and Realism, Idealism, and Positivism,' are the leisure reflections of a weil-filled mind on subjects for which it has a natural aptitude. The two last mentioned are exceptionally good. We have nowhere seen a juster estimate of Newton, or better picture of him, alike in his strength and in his weakNo volume more marked by honest thinking, variety of mood and humour, and mellow 19th century Puritanism has been published for many years by a Scotch layman than Writings by the way.'"- Specta tor, Feb. 21. "The work in its entirety is chiefly remarkable as the first attempt of a sectarian writer to compile an English ecclesiastical history, in its most sectarian period from an unsectarian point of view. We could wish that Dr. Stoughton had given more of his own recollections, for they are truer history than his collections, and throw a light upon the strangely altered complexion of that which he calls Nonconformity' but which the contemporaries whom he cites invariably call Dissent.'" — Saturday rev., Jan. 17.

"The original poems are occasional poems often graceful and tender, more rarely powerful; but they are not more than occasional. And they have the impression of effort, of a straining after effect, of a certain want of restraint in the use of ornament, an occasional defect in taste, and a ring of something not altogether true in the pathos and sentiment. In these poems Mr. Arnold is at his best when he is simply descriptive of some scene which specially appeals to his sympa. thies." Spectator, Apr. 25. Auerbach, B. "Mr. Birrell is not the author of the whole of the ad. mirable little volume, Obiter Dicta,' which we reviewed last week. Mr. George H. Radford, we hear, wrote the amusing essay on Falstaff of which we spoke so favourably, and whose quiz of Gervinus has rejoiced the soul of many lovers of Shakspere."- Academy, Sept. 6.

"This brilliant and thought-compelling little book is rendered pleasantly appetising with condiments; but it has substance as well as savour. The essays entitled Truth Hunting,' and 'The Via Media' are full of matter, and are none the worse for inciting us to frequent inward argument with the writer. The essay on, or rather the biography of, Falstaff would have delighted the soul of Charles Lamb; indeed, we do not think Elia would have been ashamed of it had it been his own." J. A. "Dr. Conrad is a reliable authority in his own chosen province of statistics; and on the rare occasions when he indulges in digressions into the general subject, his remarks are so instructive that many readers will regret that his book was not projected on a more comprehensive plan as the bare statistics of education leave much untold which the reader desires to know. The translator, who has done his special work well, has added a number of excellent notes on education in Germany, which make the author's statistics more intelligible. A preface by Mr. Bryce, in which he succinctly enumerates the present problems of English University reform, and points out in what respect the experience of Germany is fitted to help towards their solution." - Spectator, Apr. 11.

Cooke, J: E. My Lady Pokahontas; a true relation of Virginia; writ by Anas Todkill, puritan and pilgrim. Vc773MY

"To say that the author has not fully succeeded in an archaic style, is but another way of saying no one has, unless it were Thackeray. It makes but little difference, since the manner throughout is so agreeable, and the handling now and then shows so true a poetic touch."Nation, Mar. 26.

"A book may have an amount of brazen pretention and historical untruthfulness which entitles it to mention and comment; and this one seems to come within that description. It was rash in him to attempt to imitate the English style of the early part of the 17th century, when he has no conception of the vocabulary and style of the period. The story of Pocahontas saving the life of Captain John Smith, modern historical fact has shown to be a myth. 9541.M35 Martineau, Rev. J. Types of ethical theory. 2 v. (Clarendon press ser.) 1M-4M36

"When we bear in mind that it is the habit of the day to look on obscurity as of the essence of philosophy, Dr. Martineau's style may be regarded as fairly lucid, and though he is not a very systematic writer, he is always readable, and sometimes even eloquent. His main object is to advance and defend these two theses, the infallibility of Conscience,' and the ultimate indentification of ethics with religion. His own theory or school, which he baptises with the curious and original name Idio-psychological' appears to include in addition to the author, two writers who in many respects are widely different, so different, indeed, that it seems difficult to bring them under the same category, Butler and Kant. Surely, the conduct of life would be a much easier matter than it is if we could always act, to our satisfaction, on so simple a rule as that which Dr. Martineau proposes. And if society at large were to agree to act uniformly in strict accordance with this graduated scale of excellence among motives, it occurs to me to ask how long would it continue to subsist? No one can rise from Dr. Martineau's work without an admiration for the author's character, and many will derive from it additional impulses to right conduct. But it is, I think, its hortatory and edificatory, rather than its scientific or historical value which is most likely to commend it." — T: Fowler in the Academy, Apr. 23.
