He devotes a long and learned though not by any means a dry chapter to his theories respecting the aurora borealis, and elaborately explains the series of observations which lead him to suppose that the average height above the earth of the lower edges of the aurora which he examined was slightly over seventy miles. The two volumes may be read with pleasure.
