Powell, F. Y., and Mackay, J. M. History of England. Part 1. To the death of Henry VII, by F. York Powell. 8E P87 "Combines the accuracy of Mr. Bright with something of the sympathy and vividness of Mr. Green. If it cannot be said to possess the charm of style and manner which render the Short history of the English people' unique among books of its kind, Mr. Powell's work is free from the blunders as well as the affectations which to some extent disfigured that brilliant sketch." - Athenæum, Aug. 15.

Roberts, Rev. W: W. The pontifical decrees against the doctrine of the earth's movement, etc. "The author is a clergyman who followed Cardinal Manning into the Church of Rome. In 1870 he published an essay with the object of showing that Papal authority had plainly committed itself to the condemnation of Galileo, and so unanswerably demonstrated its own fallibility. The present work is a much enlarged republication of that essay, and its special value consists in the instructive picture it presents of the disengenuous quibbles by which Ultramontane writers have tried to evade the evidence of their idol's impotence, and the remarkable skill with which the author follows them through every turn of the controversy." "The substance of a series of lectures delivered in the Semitic Summer School in Philadelphia. He shows what was the popular estimate in ancient times of the vital character and sacredness of the blood, and of the enormous possibilities through blood-transference. He refers to the primeval idea that new nature was acquired through new blood; that communion not only with man but also with God, was attained through blood. He points out that similar views are found in the Bible, Old Testament and New Testament, and that these views are part of the general opinion of the ancient world." C. H. "The bulk of it consists of tales written down for the most part from recitation, and rendered as closely to the original Gaelic as the difference of the two languages permitted. Many of these appear for the first time in an Eng lish form; others are presented as offering a different version of tales which have already been translated; while a few which have already appeared elsewhere have been included to give completeness to a work designed to illustrate the characteristics of Argyllshire legend. There appear portraits (in two senses) of eminent members of the Campbell family.". Spectator, Aug. 22. Chesney, Mrs., and O'Donnell, Mrs. J. C. Life of Gen. F. R. Her eye for the technical qualities of a statue is keen, and her definitions are lucid and just; but she has neither the breadth of view nor the strength of grasp, nor the literary skill required to put the work of the ancients before us as a living thing, with the seeds of life and death in its own constitution." Leith, W: F. Narratives of Scottish Catholics under Mary Stuart and James VI.; now first printed from the mss. in the Vatican. "Students of Scottish history up to the present time have had to regret that the tale of that great upheaval which gave Scotland for the first time the chance of political stability, and a truly national church has been left almost exclusively to Protestant narrators. At the blast of Knox's trumpet the walls of the doomed church fell without hope of restoration. The apparently remediless nature of the ruin presented to the Jesuits, then in the full flush of their energy an alluring field for missionary zeal. Scarcely had Mary returned from France before an able member of their gallant body, Nicolas de Gouda, was on his way to her with a letter from the Pope. From this time a succession of devoted men, chiefly of Scottish blood, gave themselves to the task of raising their fallen church; and from their pri vate reports to the superior officers of their order Mr. Forbes has compiled an interesting and valuable book.” Saturday rev., Nov. 2. Mr. Leyland has a later word still, and as this later word flatly contradicts most of the earlier ones, I fear that the end is not yet. It is so full of interesting information that as a contribution to literary biography it may be considered a real success." - James Ashcroft Noble in the Academy, Nov.

"The story is based on a case of suspended memory. The thrilling central idea is worked out so beautifully, with such natural and artistic touch, and the whole plot is set in such a frame of delicate and charming work, that the treatment goes for more than the subject, although the reader is certainly absorded in finding out the result."- Critic, Nov. 21. "The reality of its pictures makes what would other wise be unpleasing too interesting to be laid aside.
