The feelings of the inhabitants of Alsace with regard to the annexation are thoroughly and impartially analyzed.... As for Germany herself, M. "Both interesting and vauable. Ashton, J: Legendary history of the cross; a series of 64 woodcuts from a Dutch book pub. by Veldener, 1483; pref. by S. B. Gould. "These woodcuts are reprints from the series brought out in 1863 by J. Ph. Berjeau in a History of the Holy Cross.' These early woodcuts treated as Berjeau treated them, merely from an archæological point of view, are full of interest; but as art they are simply ugly and repulsive. The letterpress which introduces these curiosities contains much interesting matter, drawn from the work of M. Rohault de Fleury, Mémoire sur les instruments de la passion de notre Sauveur Jesus Christ,' who having the affection of a pious Catholic for his subject, treated it with better taste than the English writers who borrow from him.” — Margaret Stokes in the Academy, Jan. 22. "While counting (Southey's) 'Thalaba' and 'The curse of Kehama' as among the best metrical tales in English literature,' Professor Morley observes that they yield few lines that cast a thought into imperishable form.' It was therefore a fair experiment to take the stories out of their poetical setting, and let them stand on their merits of plot and moral. Mr. Church's prose is of just the right kind for the purpose - simple yet sufficiently elevated, and skillfully inlaid with the rythmical phraseology of the old authorized version. As much has been done for the legend of Rustem, 'greatly condensed' from Firdausi." St. James's budget, Dec. 1.

"Mr. Gardiner breaks, so to speak, new ground, and the efforts of his 'prentice hand in this department of literature call for praise of no measured kind. "Decidedly interesting. On other hand it has grave faults. The absence of authorities for the various statements renders the work of little value to serious students; and the general reader will feel that a want of sympathy with American aims and ideals is a defect in a writer of American history. His zeal for the English cause too often tempts him to use a carping style of speech concerning the colonial achievements which is quite unsuited to sober history. Through.
