RICHTER'S INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. (Third Edition.) A Text-Book for Students, by Prof. VICTOR VON RICHTER, University of Breslau. Translated by EDGAR F. SMITH, M.A., Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Member of the Chemical Societies of Berlin and Paris, etc. Third American from the Fourth German Edition. 89 woodcuts and colored plate of Spectra. 12m0, 400 pages, cloth, $2.00. Examination price, postpaid, $1.50.

In this work the theory and facts of the science are brought close together and their intimate relation clearly shown. The descriptions of the various inorganic substances are full and embody the latest results and discoveries. The book has reached five editions in both Germany and Russia and has been translated in Holland and Italy. This, the Third American edition, is recommended at a number of prominent schools and colleges throughout the country.

"After a year's careful study and examination of Dr. Smith's translation of 'Richter's Inorganic Chemistry,' I have come to the conclusion that it excels all the text-books that are published on this subject. I make this statement on the basis of a thorough comparison. I studied under the celebrated Prof. von Gorup-Bessanez, at the University of Erlangen, Germany, and used his text-books for private use, but I must lay them aside, and shill introduce Richter in my classes next year."-R. C. Schiedt, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, February 13, 1889.

RICHTER'S ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, OR

CHEMISTRY OF THE CARBON COMPOUNDS. By same author and translator as above. Illustrated. 12m0, 710 pages, cloth, $3.00; leather, $3.50. Examination price, postpaid, $2.00.

This volume contains a full description of the Carbon Derivatives. The treatment of the various classes of bodies is comprehensive, the most recent and interesting results of chemical research being given with special fulness. Richter's Organic Chemistry is used as a text-book in those schools that devote the necessary time to this branch; for those, however, who must use smaller or more elementary books it will be found extremely valuable as a work of reference. HIGH SCHOOL, SYRACUSE, N. Y., March 5, 1889.

P. BLAKISTON, SON & Co.

The volumes you send me of Richter's Chemistries are among the most scholarly productions which have come to my notice for many years. It is a treat to examine almost any page of these works

Yours truly,

W. A. BROWNELL., Professor of Chemistry. Translated from the Second German Edition with the explanations and answers added by Prof. W. S. HOSKINSON, A.M., Wittenberg College. 12mo, cloth, 75 cents. Examination price, postpaid, 50 cents.

STAMMER'S CHEMICAL PROBLEMS.

"Stammer's work is highly practical, and for that reason I have a preference for it. Professor Hoskinson has performed his work well, and deserves the thanks of teachers of the science."-Prof. EDGAR F. SMITH, Translator of Richter's Chemistries.

LONGMANS, GREEN, & CO. Publish:

Longmans' School Grammar. By DAVID SALMON. Crown 8vo, 272 pages, 75 cents.

"This is a better book by far than any in common use in this country. The present grammar begins with induction, but passes immediately to deduction, and both methods are employed throughout; each induction leading to new deductions. One of the best work

ing grammars we have ever seen, and this applies to all its parts. It is excellently arranged and perfectly graded. Part four, on History and Derivation,' is as beautiful and interesting as it is valuable but this might be said of the whole book.”—Teacher, N. Y.

Longmans' Junior School Grammar.

By DAVID SALMON, Crown 8vo, 128 pages, 30 cents. The Junior School Grammar is an adap.ation of the first

half of the author's Schoo Giammar, with some of the explanations simplified, with many of the exercises amplified, and with a few of the difficulties omitted.

The characteristics of the book are, in addition to its inductive method, the number and variety of its exercises, and the omission of all the minor distinctions of grammar. It thus provides much to do and not much to remember.

EPOCHS OF AMERICAN HISTORY.

Messrs. Longmans, Green & Co. have the pleasure to announce that they have made arrangements to supplement their series, EPOCHS OF MODERN HISTORY, by a short series of books treating of the history of America, which will be published under the general title EPOCHS OF AMERICAN HISTORY.

The series will be under the Editorship of Dr. Albert Bushnell Hart, Assistant Professor of History im Harvard College. Each volume will contain about 250 pages, similar in size and style to the page of the volumes in the EPOCHS OF HISTORY series, with full marginal analysis, working bibliographies, maps, introductions, and index.

The volumes will be issued separately and each will be compete in itself. Those already arranged for will, it is hoped, provide a continuous history of the United States, from the foundation of the Colonies to the present time, which shall be suited to class use as well as for general reading and reference.

The volumes in preparation are as follows:

1. THE COLONIES (1492-1763). By REUBEN GOLD THWAITES, Secretary of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, author of "Historic Waterways," etc.

2. FORMATIOŃ OF THE UNION (1763-1329). By ALBERT BUSHNELL HART, A.B., Ph.D., the Editor of the series.

3. DIVISION AND REUNION (1829-1889). By WOODROW WILSON, Ph.D., LL.D., Professor of History and Political Economy, in Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn, author of " Congressional Government," etc., etc.
