My fixed principle is: that ▲ CHRISTIANITY WITHOUT A CHURCH

EXERCISING SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY IS VANITY AND DISSOLUTION.

And my belief is, that when Popery is rushing in on us, like an inundation, the nation will find it to be so. I say Popery; for this too I hold for a delusion, that Romanism, or Roman catholicism, is separable from Popery; almost as readily could I suppose a circle without a centre.— COLERIDGE'S Aids to Reflection, p. 224. MY DEAR JUDGE,

On your elevation to your present high office, you did me the honour to appoint me your chaplain. I know not how I can better express the gratification, which I have derived from this mark of your regard, than by requesting you to allow your name to be coupled with the following Essay.

I propose, in these pages, to vindicate the scriptural character of the English Church. Should they appear to you calculated to promote, in however small a degree, the sacred cause in which they are enlisted, you will, I am sure, overlook their deficiencies, and extend to them your valuable
