The Virunga or Mufumbiro volcanoes are a particularly isolated range of peaks that lie about 120 miles south of the Ruwenzori ice cap, in the great divide between the east tropical African savannas and the forests of the Congo basin.

They are partly in Belgian Congo (Parc National Albert) and partly on the boundary between Uganda and the mandated territory of Ruanda and Urundi and the boundary between the latter and Belgian Congo.
