Gillray is undoubtedly the prince of English Caricaturists: his productions-carried through so many years abounding in important events-illustrate in an unusually striking manner incidents in the history of Great Britain during that period.

THE QUARTERLY REVIEW (April, 1874) thus speaks of him: "GILLRAY was marked out, and, as it were, predestined for his career, by an extraordinary assemblage of qualities; wit, humour, fancy, imagination, boldness of con ception and execution, inexhaustible fertility and variety, intuitive knowledge of mankind, and unerring quickness of perception," etc.

And a very recent critic on his Caricatures says: "they are the most amusing and valuable illustrations of the social and polished life of that generation which it is possible to conceive." But it may be added, that his command over the Terrible, as evidenced by his delineations of sanguinary scenes, has scarcely ever been equalled. GILLY (Rev. W. S.)
