novels which has appeared for some time, and for those who can appreciate happy satire and humour, bread yet touched with masterly skill, we would recommend A life's remorse.'"- Spectator, Apr. 19.

Hurlbert, W: H. France and the Republic; things seen and learned in the French provinces during 1889.

"Mr. Hurlbert is a readable, but not a safe guide to the political state of France. A merit of the book is that the author understands the French tongue. Another merit lies in the extremely interesting account given of the great plate-glass works in the northeast of France. There is, however, a total want of arrangement in the volume, and we go from glass-works to the Revolution, and from Revolution to coal mines and ruins, with an utter absence of all order."— Athenæum, Apr. 12.

"Mr. Lang has published several pleasant volumes of reprinted contributions to newspapers; but none, we think, which equals this present book in variety of attrac. tion. "An important and interesting addition to the series. Mr. Le Strange is, we believe, the first Orientalist who has undertaken the highly laborious and difficult task of translating, comparing, and arranging in chronological order all the various accounts given by the Arab geographers of the cities, holy places, and dis. tricts of Palestine and Syria. He is one of the few Englishmen who combine the literary skill, knowledge of Arabic, and personal acquaintance with the localities described that such an undertaking requires, and who possess the patience and perseverance necessary to carry it to a successful conclusion. The result of Mr. Le Strange's four years' labour will be of great value to all students of the geography of Palestine who do not read Arabic." -Athenæum, May 24.

Here we dine with the monk, and live the laborious days of the miner, cultivate our garden with a dillettante prince of the blood, or overhear the bad language of an irate and tipsy copyist; visit the wards of Hotel Dieu, and become acquainted with a whole world of vanished figures, Jews, kings, harpists, heroes, workmen, but all of them in their every-day garb as they go about their daily tasks."- Athenæum, Apr. 19.

"As a history of that cataclysm they would be ludicrously inadequate, as a portrait gallery of people who played prominent and subordinate parts in the Revolution they have merits of the popular sort. The work is entirely original in conception, masterful in construction, and scholarly in ex. ecution."- Critic, July 26.

"A collection of short stories of the usual kind, hardly up to her ordinary level."— Athenæum, Mar. 8. Martinengo-Cesaresco, contessa E. Italian characters in the epoch of Unification.

"However opinion may differ on the wisdom of some of these Italian patriots, or on the means they some. times took for bringing about the freedom of their country, the romantic beauty of their lives and characters, the nobleness of their end, can never be denied. All the most striking scenes and events of that long struggle are either mentioned or described in the Countess Martinengo's book, for they all affected the lives of those whose stories she has chosen to tell. Her sketches are chiefly of lives less known than the greatest; but Victor Emmanuel, Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, are con. stantly to be met with in her pages. Her aim has not been so much to write history as to describe character." Spectator, May 3.

"It was an excellent thought of Mr. Millar's to collect into one compact illustrated volume those descriptions of Scottish castles and mansions which, during several years past, he has been contributing to the Dundee advertiser,' for the articles are far too interesting and valuable to remain permanently buried in the columns of the newspaper. Their author has manifestly entered upon his researches in the true spirit of an enthusiastic and painstaking antiquary." — Academy, July 12. Modeste, V. La nuit du 4 août, 1789-1889.

Montefiore, Sir M. H., and J. C. Lady. Diaries; life and work 1812-83; with addresses, etc. of Sir Moses; ed. by L. Loewe. 2 v. "The life of Sir Moses Montefiore is the history of a man who devoted himself with unremitting energy to the task of combatting race-prejudices, sectarian persecution, and religious fanaticism in every quarter of the globe. His services in the establishment of toleration were enormous. Dr. Loewe has published a bare record of the events of Montefiore's life. The two vol. umes contain an ample chronicle of the facts of his philanthropic career, but they do not, and perhaps designedly, make any attempt to supply a picture of the phi. lanthropist himself. Consequently they have no arrangement beyond the order of time, and are difficult reading. The personal interest is throughout unduly neglected. The facts are badly stated. The Dia ries' are a chronicle, and not a biography."-Athenæum. May 3.

...

"The starting point of this volume is a translation of selected portions of Pausanias; these are as nearly per fect in style and accuracy as can be. Upon these texts Miss Harrison hangs a delightful commentary, dealing with all the main points of Athenian topogra phy,and explaining with admirable clearness the results of the excavations made and still being made by the Greek government. In these discoveries no scholar has borne so briliant a part as Dr. Dörpfeld, and he has placed all his information at Miss Harrison's service. Accordingly there is no book except, perhaps, the excellent Guide Johanne' for Athens, re-edited by M. Haussoullier-which can be compared with the present as summarising the latest facts and views of Athenian archæology. But she is by no means content to be a commentator on Pausanias, or a writer of a manual on Athenian art. All else with her is subordinate and subsidiary to the criticism of ancient Attic myths and worships. The whole chapter devoted to the Par

Sharp, W: Life of Bobert Browning.

"Mr. Stanley, although he had many grievances, and complained, not without reason as we conceive, of the 'pitiable irresolution' of the Pasha, is nevertheless at considerable pains to do justice to his character. Mr. Stanley's great discovery was that of the broad Semliki Valley, which now joins the Albert Edward to the Albert Nyanza, but which formed anciently the bed of the lake of which the lakes just named are the survivors, themselves doomed to extinction in the course of time. We cannot follow Mr. Stanley when he wishes us to believe that his Ruwenzori represent Ptolemy's Mountains of the Moon,' and that its melting snow has been for some fifty centuries most vital to the people of Egypt.' His own observation and meas. urements disprove this.... Nor can we accept his assumption that our modern chartographers are inferior to those of Homer's time. These fascinating vol. umes are sure to find readers in every circle. Their scientific value is of a high order, but they will perhaps be most highly appreciated because they afford an insight into the Africa of today, enable the reader to gauge many of the capabilities of that continent, and present him with an account of one of the most interesting episodes of contemporaneous African history. The illustrations are numerous and excellent." - Athenaum, July 5.

"Not only his best novel, but one of the most noteworthy novels of the day. So faithful a delineation of Sevillian manners and customs, of purely Andalusian idiosyncrasies, has not appeared since the 'Rinconte y Cortadillo' of Cervantes. But the Seville of Señor Valdés is no longer a picturesque one. It is the Seville of to-day, than which there is no happier hunting ground for a novelist equipped with his perspicacity, keenness of observation, and pungent humour. Its very dialect lends to his irreproachable style, direct and swift, without being hurried, an additional savour. Great as

is the descriptive power of Señor Valdés, it is in the delineation of character that his talent finds its fullest expression." Saturday rev., Mar. 29.

"It may be wrong to assert that Mr. Wakeman has an invincible prejudice against Fox as a statesman, and entertains a singular admiration for George III.'s most reprehensible acts; yet such is the impression which the perusal of this 'Life' will doubtless make upon the reader. ... Much that is most creditable to Fox is omitted from this life by Mr. Wakeman. The truth is that Mr. Wakeman appears to lack the qualifications requisite for doing justice to such a many-sided and exceptional character as Fox, and his failure to produce an adequate Life' of him may have been a foregone conclusion." -Athenæum, May 10.

The literary and historical studies which are comprised in the second division of the book are of various weight and interest.
