7, 1891. With very few exceptions the texts here given depend on the copies made by Mr. Paton from the original stones. A considerable number, including some of the most interesting, are his own discovery; but even of those which had been copied by previous travellers the text has in many cases been improved by his careful reading, and appears here in a more accurate and intelligible form than in previous publications." The most interesting chapters are those in which the writer gives the prevalent views of the colonists on such subjects as their relations to Great Britain, the treatment of the natives, and temperance legislation. Smith, A. H. Chinese characteristics.

"Mr. Smith is evidently a man with that rare gift, the gift for racial diagnosis. He is able to discriminate between the fundamental and the merely superficial differences that exist between Western and Chinese civilisation; more than that he can transfer to his readers the appreciation of characteristics which the Chinese pos. sess, but for which it is impossible to find an analogy among Europeans. He manages to bring his readers far closer to the actual Chinaman than the ordinary writer on the Celestial Empire; he does not merely describe what is behind the curtain; he lifts it and lets us look in." - Kegan Paul's catal., April.

So much has disappeared, the liberality of the Dukes of Alva has given many scholars and editors access to their archives, and as the Duchess has endeavoured to avoid reprinting docu. ments which were already accessible, her volume has inevitably been largely compiled from what had not hitherto been thought of sufficient interest to deserve reproduction. The chief interest of the volume belongs to a period anterior to the 17th and 18th centuries. There are numerous letters from and to the great Duke of Alva. Many show him in an unexpectedly genial light as a patron of the arts and artists. Literary world, Apr. 23.
