Michel, E. Les Van de Velde. (Les artistes célèbres.)

"Herein those who have but a vague idea of the painters hit at in the first half of Mr. Ruskin's petulant phrase, the Van-somethings and Back-somethings,' may en large their information and sharpen their criticism. Even in a country where the arts were so much of an hereditary profession as in the Low Countries, the family of the Van de Veldes was astonishingly prolific in persons of remarkably various powers and kinds of talent. Founded by a plain writing-master, it gave birth, in the course of about a century to the quaint cuts of Esaias, the more highly-finished and original engraving of Jan, the sea-pieces, peaceful and warlike, of Willem the younger, and the landscapes and animals of Adrian, besides minor things from minor members."- Sat. rev., Aug. 27.

Millet, F. D. The Danube from the Black Forest to the Black Sea; illust.

"If the makers of the book had not written any letter press at all we should learn much from the pictures, which half as numerous as the pages, tell their own story. We see the physiognomy of many nationalities, all in their own costumes, varying with age, sex, occupation, as well as with working or festal days. Then we see bulbous domes, towers of more stories than Babel, high-peaked gables, town walls, castles perched like eagles' nests on top-most crags, modern fortresses, mosques, and minarets, cathedrals, monasteries scarcely surpassed by their mother and model, Monte Casino. The river is given us by installments in half-a-dozen sectional maps. But Mr Millet's narrative is worthy of his pencil sketches, and it may be doubted which of them owes the more to the other." - Nation, Sept. 29. Mills, H. V. Lake country romances.

"Deals with historical material rather than with local legends. The Wooing of Katherine Parr,' and its sequel, 'A tragic coronation,' are fair specimens of the historical tale, with sketches of illustrious personages, quite up to the Ainsworthian standard observed in the Tower of London.'"- Sat. rev., Sept. 10.

Morelli, G. (pseud. I. Lermolieff). Italian painters; critical studies of their works; the Borghese and Doria-Pamfili galleries; tr. from the Germ. by C. J. Ffoulkes with introd. by Sir A. H. Layard; illust.

"Among all the art critics of this century, none has aroused such storms of vituperation as Signor Morelli; and on the other hand,no other writer has been praised and quoted with such fervent belief and admiration. Sir H: Layard, who seems inclined to accept the dogma of Morell's infallibility, devotes part of his interesting Introduction to a reply to attacks which were made in a very intemperate and ungenerous spirit on Morelli very soon after his death. The volume is a handsome one and contains a great mass of most valuable and interesting matter, treated with much literary skill, and forming a work which no one who really cares for Italian art should fail to read and to think over." Pool, J: J. Studies in Mohammedanism; with chapter on Islam in England.

"Although Mr. Pool has, in our opinion, attributed an exaggerated importance to the quixotic vagaries of Mr. Quilliam, he has done good service in publishing this popular exposition of the doctrines and real char ter of Islam. Robinson, H. J. Colonial chronology; principal events connected with the Eng. colonies and India, from close of 15th century to present time.

"Perhaps the most striking feature of this book is afforded by a series of four chronological maps. By means of these we get a more comprehensive and instantaneous bird's-eye-view of the growth of the Empire than even the brief epitome of history in the par. allel columns of the tables can give us, though we have to turn from them to history if we would know the means by which results have been attained. The results themselves compel attention, and could hardly fail to awaken interest to learn something of that secular struggle and expansion that has in four centuries so altered the face of the habitable globe, ethnologically, politically, and materially." — Sat. rev., July 16. Saintsbury, G: Miscellaneous essays.

"He is always consistent in adherence to his own excellent rule of critical conduct; always to put the exposition of the subject before the display of personal cleverness. He is always consistent in his refusal to enter into those niceties of consideration which appear to his very English sense of things to be mere toolishness, which to critics like Mr. Pater are the one thing needful in criticism. He is entirely faithful to that which has point but not charm, which bristles with offence yet interests by its individuality." — Academy, August 27.

Revue bleue, 16 juil.

In addition, the editor has obtained possession of some unpublished letters." Stephens, H. M. Principal speeches of the statesmen and orators of the French Revolution, 1789-95. 2 v.

"Mr. Stephens has a knowledge of the subject which is certainly not surpassed in England, with a very great deal of industry, if not in all respects, as it seems to us perfect judgment. He has borrowed that excellent custom of the French historical school, which, whenever a person of the slightest importance is mentioned for the first time, appends a sufficiently exhaustive note as to his life and adventures."— Sat. rev., Aug. 6.

Payne, E: J: History of the new world called America. Vol. 1.

"We have here only the voyages of Columbus and of his immediate successors, together with an account of the mythology of Peru, Central America, and Mexico. The writer follows the same general conception of history of which Buckle is chief exponent, but he purposes apparently to enter more into continuous his torical detail and concrete fact. To write history in this fashion demands not only vast reading and untiring industry, but also almost encyclopædic knowledge. The writer not only touches, but generalises upon almost every side of human learning. It is impossible that any one person can attain the exactness of a specialist on all these points, and Mr. Payne has done well to protest beforehand against any such claim. But, however many faults, this work will remain one of the most important, if not the most important, on the history of the New World yet published on this side of the Atlantic.
