PREFACE.

THE object of this publication is to supply a want which it is believed is much felt in the Church of England,—that, namely, of a Church Kalendar, containing, in addition to the matter usually given in such yearly registers, brief histories of those Lesser Festivals of the Church which occur throughout the year; practical Suggestions for the decent and orderly use of the Book of Common Prayer, and the administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church; together with some account of various religious and other Institutions in connection with the Church of England.

The Compiler of the Notes on the Lesser Holy-Days has had to prepare his allotted task under many disadvantages. He has endeavoured, however, to make the best use of the materials within his reach; and, as respects the events recorded, he has carefully sought to distinguish facts from mere tradition,-paying the utmost attention to the accuracy of the modes of representing the several Saints in works of Art, their emblems, and the number and the localities of the dedications in their name. In future issues of the KALENDAR these Notes may be enlarged and improved, and
