The Treasurer read a communication concerning certain historical manuscripts which belonged to the late JARED SPARKS, and it was

Voted, that the additional gift of $200 from EDWARD RUSSELL, Esq., be gratefully accepted and that it be credited to the Edward Russell Scholarship Fund.

Voted, to appoint GEORGE HOWARD MONKS, M.D., Instructor in Surgical Pathology in the Dental School for the year 1886-87.

"By the death of EPHRAIM WHITMAN GURNEY the President and Fellows have been deprived of a beloved associate whose wisdom, impartiality, and disinterestedness, combined with his intimate knowledge of the University and its graduates, made him an invaluable member of the Board.

"Mr. GURNEY had the wisdom which comes from sound judgment informed by wide reading and keen observation, and inspired by quick sympathy and sober enthusiasm.

“In counsel he was progressive but patient, independent but conciliatory, strenuous but just.

"In administration he united gentleness of manner with essential firmness, a quick sense of humor with a serious view of the obligations and responsibilities of life, a penetrating insight with a charitable judgment. As a teacher he was distinguished by variety and accuracy of knowledge, which he communicated in attractive and interesting forms; his great acquisitions were always at the service of his pupils and his friends.

His colleagues upon this Board desire to record their admiration and affection for him, and their grief at his loss."

MEETING OF OCTOBER 13, 1886. The consent of the Board of Overseers having been obtained, Voted, to proceed to the election of a Fellow of the Corporation in place of EPHRAIM WHITMAN GURNEY, deceased; whereupon, a ballot being had, it appeared that ALEXANDER AGASSIZ was chosen. Voted, to communicate this election to the Board of Overseers that they may consent thereto if they see fit.

MEETING OF OCTOBER 25, 1886. Voted, that the additional gift of $265.70 from the Class of 1879, to be used under the direction of Dr. TAUSSIG towards furnishing a library and reading-room for the department of Political Economy, be gratefully accepted; and that the thanks of the President and Fellows therefor be sent to FRANCIS ALMY, Esq., the Class Secretary.

Voted, that the thanks of the President and Fellows be sent to Mrs. HENRY Draper, of New York, for her additional gift of $1000 towards the expenses at the Observatory of Harvard University on account of the Draper Memorial.
