NOTES.

May Anti-Slavery Collection. From Mr. Dean Sage of Brooklyn the collection has lately received the rare first volume of the Liberator, which had long been sought for without success. This copy possesses especial interest, as it was formerly owned by Oliver Johnson, who frequently refers to it in his "William Lloyd Garrison and his Times," and has inserted in it an autograph note expressing his high opinion of its historic value. It is, moreover, the copy originally sent in exchange to the Protestant, then edited by George Bourne, the author of "The Picture of Slavery," and nearly every number still bears the address Protestant, in Garrison's own handwriting. By the gift of this volume the file of the Liberator in the May collection is made perfect, containing the best unbroken record of the long struggle -finally crowned with success of the anti-slavery cause in this country during the thirty-five years from 1831 to 1865.

In this connection it is worth noting that the May collection received a short time ago, from Mr. F. J. Garrison, a large phototype copy of a very fine portrait and striking likeness of William Lloyd Garrison in his 69th year, made by Rockwood of New York in 1874. The engraving by Johnson, which formed the frontispiece to the Century for August, 1855, was copied from the same original. This portrait of Garrison hangs in the University Library near that of Prudence Crandall, presented to the University by the late Rev. Samuel J. May, of which a wood engraving is given in the Century for September, 1885, with an interesting note on the history of the portrait.

Another somewhat rare volume recently added to the collection is the "Slave Songs of the United States" (New York, 1867), edited by W. F. Allen, C. P. Ware, and Mrs. W. P. Garrison. The value and interest of this copy have been greatly enhanced by the insertion of a number of letters which formed a part of the correspondence preliminary to the publication of the book. They include letters from Lt.Col. Wm. Lee Apthorp, Miss M. W. Benton, Mrs. Chas. J. Bowen, N. C. Dennett, Miss C. L. Fosten, the Rev. John McKim, Kane O'Donnel, James Schouler the historian, Gen. T. Seymour, Gen. Wager Swayne, Miss L. M. Towne, and C. P. Ware, all contributing more or less to the history of this collection of slave songs, or to the elucidation of the songs themselves.

[blocks in formation]

1,112 volumes of law text-books, 336 volumes of law periodicals, and 512 volumes of miscellaneous legal and general works, making in all 4,060 volumes. Including the King collection, the present extent of the University Library is 61,583 volumes and 16,075 pamphlets, showing an increase during the year of 7,204 volumes and 450 pamphlets.

Among the more important additions of the year may be noted a complete set of the Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1837-1885, in 80 volumes; the collection of municipal documents of American cities, the catalogue of which is begun in this number of the Bulletin; the Annual Register from 1800 to date, completing the set from its beginning in 1758; Levi's Annals of British Legislation, 18 volumes, an exceedingly valuable digest of the parliamentary blue-books for the period from 1856 to 1866; complete sets of the Works of Balzac, Sainte-Beuve, and Ruskin; the valuable collection of French classic writers, now in course of publication, known as Les Grands Écri vains de la France, of which 80 volumes have appeared; a set of the Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History; the memorial volume of the Tercentenary festival of the University of Edinburgh; and a manuscript Life of Patrick Henry, based on family documents, by E. Fontaine.

During the year, 9,947 volumes were fully catalogued on the dictionary system and incorporated in the new General Catalogue, which now includes 27,491 volumes, or nearly one half of the Library.

The records kept at the delivery desk show that from Sept. 15th, 1885, to June 1st, 1886, the number of volumes drawn by students was 20,208; the number of volumes drawn for home use by professors was 3,461. These figures do not include the use made of the general works of reference, the collections in the Seminary Room, or the books reserved for class use by professors; and judging from the constant use which is made of these classes of books, to which students have free access, it is safe to say that these numbers represent about one third of the actual use of the Library.

During the year 125 cards of admission to the alcoves, for limited periods, were granted to students engaged in special work, and forty lists of references on the various subjects announced for essays and orations were prepared, and were much consulted by the students. Since the beginning of the winter term, in January, 1886, the Library has been lighted by incandescent electric lamps, and during term-time has been kept open on week days from 8 A. M. to 9.30 P. M. continuously, except on Saturdays, when it is closed at 5 P. M. The light has, on the whole, given satisfaction, and the attendance, though not large, has yet been sufficient to justify the continuance of the experiment.
