PREFACE.

THE following Sermons have been selected for publication from among several preached before the same audience, as having a special bearing upon subjects of present or recent interest.

66

The Sermon which stands first on the list may perhaps be thought scarcely enough of a piece with the others, to be joined with them under the common designation of 'Helps towards holding fast the Form of Sound Words." Those, however, who are acquainted with the present state of feeling in Oxford, will recognise in its title a reference to a subject which is at this time one of considerable interest there. Much complaint is made,-often unjustly enough,of the character of the Sermons which are delivered from the University Pulpit. The Author believed that an attempt to point out some of the hindrances which are apt to mar success in preaching, with special reference to University Sermons, would be an attempt in season. And having ventured upon it, in the first instance, from the pulpit, he now avails himself of the present opportunity to repeat it in print.

The remaining Sermons are designed, in accordance with the title which he has chosen for his book, as a help towards the establishment of sound belief and right practice, at a time when men's minds are more or less unsettled in both respects. If they deal for the most part with controversial subjects, yet it has been the Author's endeavour to treat those subjects in a spirit as far as possible removed from that which is usually supposed to be the spirit of controversy. And he has striven, while preaching to the times, so to act upon Archbishop Leighton's principle as to preach for eternity also.

Three of the Sermons, (III, VI, and VII,) have already been published singly. It is hoped, however, that they may do further service, thus collected together, and joined in one volume with others, which, to a certain extent, have a common object with them.

a Sermon VI. "On the Doctrine of the Atonement," also formed one of several, by various Authors, which were collected into one volume, and published under the title of "Christian Faith and the Atonement." The volume has been for some time out of print.
