A TIMELY WORK FOR THEOLOGICAL STUDENTS.

WHITHER?

A Theological Question for the Times.

By the Rev. CHARLES AUGUSTUS BRIGGS, D. D., Professor in the Union Theological Seminary, New York City. 8vo, $1.75.

CONTENTS: Orthodoxy; Mistaken Attitudes; Change of Base; Excesses; Failures; Departures; Perplexities; Progress in Theology; Christian Union.

Dr. Briggs's book is bold, radical, almost startling. It is written and published in view of the agitation in the Presbyterian Church regarding the revision of the Confession of Faith, and presents facts and arguments which every one interested in this question must heed. The author's main contention is that all Christian denominations have drifted from their moorings. "The process of dissolution," he says, "has gone on long enough. The time has come for the reconstruction of theology, of polity, of worship, and of Christian life and work. The drift in the Church ought to stop. The barriers between the Protestant denominations should be removed and an organic union formed. An Alliance should be made between Protestantism and Romanism and all other branches of Christendom."

"It is a notable contribution to the religious literature of our time, and can hardly fail to produce a great effect in the denomination to which the author belongs." - The Examiner.

"The book comes to us fulfilling all anticipations. Interesting as a novel, almost elegant in its language, clear in its expression, marvelous in showing research, the book will pay largely for its reading." The Christian Inquirer.

"It is nobly catholic from beginning to end. It will attract a great many eyes and provoke a great deal of discussion. There is not a touch of rationalism or rationalistic speculation in the book; and, freely as the author deals with his opponents, it is an honest freedom which will promote good feeling even amid debate." The N. Y. Independent.

FOREIGN MISSIONS.

Their Place in the Pastorate, in Prayer, and in Conferences.

By the Rev. AUGUSTUS C. THOMPSON, D. D., Author of "Moravian Missions," etc. 12mo, $1.75.

The success of Dr. Thompson's "Moravian Missions," and other works, foreshadows an equally wide popularity for this volume, the broad scope of which is well indicated in the title. The volume is addressed to clergymen, and has to do with their relation to foreign missions. But it has a deep interest for laymen as well, for the subject involves the relation of the congregation to the question of foreign missions. The author's style is easy and fluent, rich in anecdote and allusion.

PAUL DU CHAILLU'S GREAT WORK.

THE VIKING AGE.

The Early History, Manners, and Customs of the Ancestors of the English-speaking Nations. Illustrated from the Antiquities Discovered in Mounds, Cairns, and Bogs, as well as from the Ancient Sagas and Eddas. By PAUL R. DU CHAILLU, author of "Equatorial Africa," "Land of the Midnight Sun," etc. With 1400 Illustrations. 2 vols. 8vo, $7.50.

Mr. Du Chaillu's great popular work is the product of eight and a half years of constant labor. It presents a graphic picture of the civilization of the Norsemen, their laws, customs, habits, industrial skill, and mode of life. Mr. Du Chaillu's inference from the great mass of evidence thus presented is that ancesttors of the English-speaking race were Scandinavian, and not, as is generally held, Germanic in origin. The importance as well as the interest of the work is thus apparent. The volumes are enriched with 1400 illustrations, conveying a vast amount of curious information and adding beauty to a useful holiday volume.

"Nothing so important as this work has appeared for some time. It is destined to heave up old traditions and to compel men to new views of the history of Europe."-N. Y. Commercial Advertiser.
