With Psalms. For the Use of Congregations. Edited by George Harris, D. D., and William J. Tucker, D. D., Professors in Andover Theological Seminary, and Mr. Edward K. Glezen, of Providence, Rhode Island.

The Music Committee of the Eliot Church, Newton, Mass. (Rev. Wol-
cott Calkins, D. D.), in choosing a new hymn book for use in their church,
applied the test of singing every tune in each book under examination. The
hymns were studied with equal care, and as a result the committee decided
on Hymns of the Faith, and ordered about one thousand copies.
Rev. Albert H. Plumb, D. D., Pastor of the Walnut Avenue Congrega-
tional Church, Boston, writes: "I have much enjoyed the perusal of Hymns
of the Faith. It has the great advantage of comprising, in a manual of con-
venient form and beautiful mechanical execution, many rare hymns and
much fine music nowhere else combined so far as I know."

Rev. F. W. Baldwin, Chelsea, Mass., says of Hymns of the Faith: "In
choice of hymns and tunes, in arrangement of the Psalms for chanting, and
in the good taste shown in all its parts, it is preeminent. I believe it is
destined to supersede many of the manuals now in use, and that wherever
introduced it cannot fail to lead to higher and truer forms of worship."
The Congregationalist, of Boston, says: "For richness, fitness, and
variety in that department, the collection is preeminent. . . . We doubt if
there be any that in this respect approaches it in freshness and fullness of
adaptation to the needs of our Christian congregations."

AMERICAN BOOK OF
CHURCH SERVICES.

With Selections for Responsive Reading, and full Orders of Service for the Celebration of Matrimony, and for Funerals and other Occasional Ministrations; also, an ample list of Selections of Sacred Music, with References for the Guidance of Pastors and Choristers. Arranged by Rev. Edward Hungerford. 16mo, $1.25.

Rev. Daniel Merriman, D. D., Pastor of the Central Church, Worcester, Mass., says of it: "The American Book of Church Services seems to me on the whole the best of the kind that has been presented to the churches, harmonizing as it does with the general Congregational tradition in respect to worship, and making a distinct and important advance upon it. . . . I like very much the increased and rightful use which it makes in respect to music, the choir calls, responses, chants, and antiphons. I like also the bringing forward of the litany as a helpful part of worship. Particularly do I like the litany which you propose for the Sunday-school. The order for family worship is also excellent.'

Correspondence with Pastors and Church Committees with reference to the introduction of “ Hymns of the Faith" and "Church Services" is cordially invited by the Publishers,

NEW HOLIDAY EDITION.

THE MARBLE FAUN.

A Romance of Monte Beni.

By NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE.

[graphic]
[ocr errors]

New Holiday Edition. Beautifully illustrated with fifty photogravures of Sculpture, Paintings, etc., and of localities in which the scenes of the book are laid chiefly views in Rome. With a steel portrait of Hawthorne. In two volumes, 8vo, gilt top, with slip covers in Italian style, in cloth box, $6.00. Beautifully bound in special style of full polished calf, $12.00, net.

"The Marble Faun," the scene of which is so largely laid in Rome and its neighborhood, is especially adapted to illustration. It has even been common, during past years, for travelers in Italy to take "The Marble Faun" as a guide-book to certain portions of Rome, and every one is familiar with the little Tauchnitz editions, interleaved with more or less satisfactory photographs of the various localities, of the statues, and of the pictures, mentioned in the novel.

The Publishers have, in this volume, proceeded much on the plan of a connoisseur extending a volume of which he is particularly fond. They have spared no pains in selecting the best subjects from hundreds of views and pictures, and, in addition to the regular sources of supply, have laid many libraries and collections, public and private, under contribution for the choicest photographs which also were the best suited for photogravure reproduction.

Not content with this, they have reproduced the photogravures almost entirely from photographs much larger than the finished reproductions, in order to gain a sharpness of impression which could not have been obtained in any other way. These photogravures are printed in the tint best adapted to bring out the statue, picture, or landscape reproduced. The result is so thoroughly satisfactory that the Publishers feel quite repaid for all the time and pains which have been spent upon the work.

A glance at the list of Illustrations will show what subjects have been chosen.

A Series of Biographies of Men who have exerted great influence on the Religious Thought and Life of America.

This series is designed to serve the same purpose with regard to the religious history of America which the series of American Statesmen serves with regard to its political history. It will include biographies of eminent men who represent the theology and methods of the various religious denominations of America.

It is hoped that the series, when completed, will not only depict in a clear and memorable way several great figures in American religious history, but will indicate in some adequate degree the leading characteristics of that history, the various types of theology which have shaped or been shaped by the various churches, and the relation of these to the life and thought of the nation.

Each volume, uniform 16mo, gilt top, $1.25. The first volume, now ready, is

Jonathan Edwards.

By Professor A. V. G. ALLEN, author of "The Continuity of Christian Thought." 16m0, $1.25.

Professor Allen has portrayed with remarkable success the character and achievements of Jonathan Edwards and the theological system with which the name of Edwards is associated. He writes with the impartiality of a historian, and admirably describes the great qualities of Edwards and the profound influence exerted by him on American religious thought.

The following will be among the earlier issues in the Series:

Wilbur Fisk. By Prof. GEORGE PRENTICE, of Wesleyan University.

William Augustus Muhlenberg. By Rev. WILLIAM WILberforce NEWTON, author of "Summer Sermons," etc. Charles Hodge. By President FRANCIS L. PATTON, of Princeton.

Francis Wayland. By Prof. J. O. MURRAY, of Princeton. Archbishop John Hughes. By JOHN G. SHEA, LL. D., author of "The Catholic Authors of America," etc., etc. Theodore Parker. By JOHN FISKE, author of "The Idea of God," "Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy," etc.

Others to be announced later.

It will be seen that the volumes already provided for include eminent names in the Congregational, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Baptist, Roman Catholic, and Unitarian Churches. These books and those that will follow them in this series can hardly fail to do a great service by their clear statement of the views held in the leading religious denominations, by the commemoration of the work and character of noteworthy representatives of these denominations, and by revealing the fundamental unity of the religious life underlying the wide diversity of creed.
