THE ENGLISH CATALOGUE OF BOOKS FOR 1861

Is now ready for delivery, price 3s. 6d.

47 LUDGATE HILL: April 1, 1862. THE past fortnight has produced few works which stand out prominently in the list, or are likely to cause any extraordinary sensation in the Circulating Libraries. We must, however, except Mr. Spedding's Letters and Life of Bacon, two volumes of which, carrying the narrative down to the great Lord Chancellor's fortieth year, have been published and we may add the Letters of the celebrated Mendelssohn, and the entertaining volume entitled Remains of the Late Mrs. Richard Trench, edited by her Son, Dean Trench. Mr. Spedding writes with a judicial gravity which will not perhaps be relished by readers who read for mere excitement; but his work bears traces of the great and long labour bestowed upon it, and will,

no doubt, take its place as the standard authority on all points in Bacon's career. Contrary to expectation, Mr. Spedding offers only an occasional and merely incidental opinion upon Mr. Hepworth Dixon's vindication of Bacon, published some time since. On the whole, however, the tendency of his work is also to clear his hero of the gravest of the popular charges against him, which is a noticeable sign. The great question of the alleged bribery cases falls, of course, into a later portion of the narrative, of which two more volumes are in preparation; and in this, paper read by Mr. Dixon before the Society of Antiquaries, since the publication of his book -a paper remarkable for its critical acumen and close reasoning upon historical evidencecannot fail to receive due attention. That Lord Bacon-Pope's famous line about the "basest, meanest of mankind" notwithstanding really never did confess his guilt, was in itself a discovery of great importance, and one certainly not the less remarkable because arrived at by Mr. Dixon upon materials which had been before the world, and under the eyes of biographers and critics, for a couple of centuries.

the

With the characteristics of Mendelssohn's Letters, a recent article in the Edinburgh has already made readers acquainted. The musical public will read with interest the great composer's descriptions of Italy, with his remarks on Italian music-an occasional bar of which he jots down from memory, giving to the letters a somewhat unusual appearance. Dean Trench's publication, comprising selections from his mother's journals, letters, and papers, or a portion of it, was, we believe, some time ago circulated privately among his friends; but it will certainly be welcome to that larger circle to which its editor has now wisely resolved to submit it. The volume is filled with shrewd criticisms and lively gossip upon the persons and events-literary, artistic, and political-which interested society in England and on the Continent during the latter part of the last and commencement of the present century. Mrs. Trench died in 1827. A fine portrait of her, from a painting by Romney, accompanies the volume.

The following is our usual classification of the more important publications of the fortnight:In LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AND ART we have an Essay by the accomplished author of Friends in Council, entitled Organisation in Daily Life; an original and interesting philological work with the title of English Retraced, or Remarks founded on a comparison of the Breeches Bible with the English of the Present Day; a Lecture given at Oxford, by Mr. Matthew Arnold, called Last Words on Translating Homer; two volumes of Recreations of a Sportsman, by Lord William Lennox, which embraces all varieties of sporting adventure; and a work by Professor Maurice entitled Modern Philosophy from the Fourteenth Century to the French Revolution, with a Glimpse into the Nineteenth Century.

Under HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY we find the first instalment of two volumes of Mr. Spedding's long-expected Life of Bacon, which we have already referred to; the Rev. G. R. Gleig's adaptation of Brialmont's Life of Wellington, in a new and condensed form, in 1 vol., with such modifications as entitle it to be considered a new book; Mendelssohn's Letters from Italy and Switzerland, translated from the German by Lady Wallace, in 1 vol., also alluded to above; and a slight but spirited Sketch of the History of the United States, from Independence to Secession, by J. M. Ludlow, with an Account of the Struggle for Kansas, by Mr. Thomas Hughes, the author of Tom Brown.

GEOGRAPHY AND TRAVEL yield but two works of importance-Dr. Corrigan's Ten Days in Athens, with Notes by the Way (a sketch of a Tour in the Summer of 1861); and A Family Tour Round the Coasts of Spain and Portugal during the Winter of 1860-61, by Lady Dunbar. In THEOLOGY we find Scripture Stories for the Young, by the Rev. F. Calder, with illustrations; and a similar work entitled Bible Stories, with Coloured Pictures, Old and New Testament Series, each in 1 vol.; and Messiah as Foretold and Expected, a Course of Sermons preached before the University of Cambridge, by F. Harold Browne.

In FICTION we have Mrs. S. C. Hall's interesting story entitled Can Wrong be Right? already familiar to the readers of the St. James's Magazine, in 2 vols.; The White Rose of Chayleigh, 3 vols.; Recommended to Mercy, 3 vols.; Abel Drake's Wife, by John Saunders, 1 vol.; Harold Overdon Ashore and Afloat, 1 vol.; The Woman of Spirit, 2 vols.; and a tale of Biblical times entitled The Strength of Judah and the Vengeance of Ashur, 1 vol.

In POETRY.-Last Poems, by Mrs. Browning, which will have a mournful interest for her many readers and admirers. In EDUCATIONAL LITERATURE.-The First Part of a substantial Hebrew Grammar, with Exercises, by M. Kalisch. In LAW.-A new work on the Law of Uses, by Mr. Hanbury Jones; and A Handbook to the Stamp Duties, by Francis Muir.

There have been few NEW EDITIONS, but we may mention one of the Rev. E. Bickersteth's Prayers for Families for Six Weeks, printed in large type; a 2nd of The Old Folks from Home (an account of a Tour in Ireland), by Mrs. Gatty; and a 6th of Mr. Murray's Handbook of Rome and Its Environs.

Messrs. SMITH, ELDER, & Co.'s list of works in the press includes Mrs. Beecher Stowe's new tale, Agnes of Sorrento, which will be concluded in the May number of the Cornhill Magazine, and will be published in a complete form, in 1 vol., shortly afterwards, the publishers having secured a copyright in the work; Life in the Forests of the Far East, by Mr. Spenser St. John, 1 vol., with sixteen coloured and tinted lithographs and three maps; Reminiscences of Captain Gronow, formerly of the Grenadier Guards, being Anecdotes of the Camp, the Court, and the Clubs, at the close of the War with France, with illustrations; and other works.

Messrs. LONGMAN & Co. will publish on Thursday next a 2d edition, enlarged, of Mr. G.

[ocr errors]

Poulett Scrope's work on Volcanoes: the Character of their Phenomena, their Share in the Structure and Composition of the Surface of the Globe, &c.

Messrs. Low, Son, & Co. will publish in a few days, beautifully printed on toned paper, Prince Albert's Golden Precepts, comprising Maxims and Opinions extracted from the Speeches and Addresses of His late Royal Highness, many of which are now for the first time collected, and carefully arranged, with an Index. Each extract contains some distinct passage comprising thoughts or opinions, or expressing some personal feeling of their author, with a separate heading in the form of a book of Ana or Table-talk.

Messrs. DAY & SON will publish, in a few days, Sketches from Nature in Pencil and Water Colours, imp. 4to., containing text and 17 plates, six in colours, the rest on tinted paper, with high lights. They also announce, by permission of Her Majesty's Commissioners, Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition, 1862, by J. B. Waring. The work will be published in Parts, each Part to contain six plates and descriptive text, in a wrapper. Part 1 will appear on the 1st of May. The entire work will form three very handsome volumes, containing 300 plates.

Messrs. SEELEY, JACKSON, & Co. have just published a Scriptural Historical Tale entitled The Strength of Judah and the Vengeance of Ashur, with a frontispiece illustrating the history of Senacherib, from the marbles in the British Museum. The design of the work has been to connect the events of the times of Isaiah with the biography of a fictitious hero; without distorting the events of the sacred narrative, the author has succeeded in producing a story of powerful interest. The same house also publish, with a new frontispiece (fifth thousand), Broad Shadows of Life's Pathway, by the Author of Doing and Suffering, which has reached, we observe, its fifteenth thousand.

Messrs. BELL & DALDY's list of new books comprises The Schole-Master, by Roger Ascham, edited by the Rev. J. E. B. Mayor; A Handy-Book of the Chemistry of Soils, by John Scoffern, with illustrations; A Compendium of Facts and Formulæ in Pure and Mixed Mathematics, for the use of Mathematical students, by G. R. Smalley; Aunt Judy's Letters, by Mrs. Gatty, illustrated by Clara S. Lane.

Messrs. DARTON & HODGE will publish early in April a new work, to be entitled The Foes of Our Faith, and How to Defeat Them, or the Weapons of Our Warfare with Modern Infidelity. The book will be uniform in size with the new cheap edition of Essays and Reviews.

Messrs. HURST & BLACKETT announce for appearance early in April, The Life of Edward Irving, Minister of the National Scotch Church, London, illustrated by his journals and correspondence, by Mrs. Oliphant, in 2 vols.; and a new novel, entitled Saturday Sterne, by J. E. Reade, in 3 vols.

Messrs. W. OLIPHANT & Co., of Edinburgh, announce, among other works, Lord Bacon's Bible Thoughts, with Preface by Rev. Dr. Cairns, of Berwick.

Messrs. NISBET & Co. have in the press a new work, entitled Eighteen Years amongst the Wild Men of the Burmese Mountains, by Ellen B. Mason.

Mr. BENTLEY will publish in a few days a 4th Edition of Mr. Spence's American Union, thoroughly revised; and has also nearly ready a new work entitled Sirenia, a Past Existence.

Messrs. KNIGHT & SON, of Clerkenwell Close, are about to publish Memorials of John Venning, Esq., formerly of St. Petersburg, and late of Norwich, with numerous notices from his manuscripts, of the Imperial family of Russia. The name of Mr. Venning is well known to philanthropy for his inquiries into the condition of the prisons in the Russian Empire.

Messrs. MACMILLAN's list of new publications comprises Poems, by Arthur Hugh Clough, reprinted and selected from his unpublished Manuscripts, with a Memoir of F. T. Palgrave; Melibus in London, by James Payn; Goblin Market, and other Poems, by Christina Rossetti, with two designs by D. G. Rossetti; and numerous other works.

Messrs. J. HOGG & SONS announce, to begin on the 1st of May, a new series, entitled Illustrated Books for Young Readers-a series of books with a meaning, specially adapted for the entertainment and instruction of the young.

We are sorry to announce the somewhat sudden death of Mr. Roderick Flanagan, whose work, the History of New South Wales, is in the press, and will shortly appear in two volumes. Mr. Flanagan had spent many years in Australia collecting materials for his history, which will contain the most elaborate account of the colony which has yet been published.

Mr. Cobden is about to publish a volume upon the important subject of International Maritime Law.

Thom's British Directory and Official Handbook of the United Kingdom (Groombridge & Co.), of which the first annual publication has just appeared, forms a valuable addition to our books of reference. In a closely-printed volume of upwards of thirteen hundred pages, it gives, besides statistical information and the matter usually found in Almanacks, statistics of the past year, and such works, complete directories of Civil, Army, Navy, and Volunteer Services, Members of Parliament, Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage, County and Borough Register-in short, all persons connected in any way with the Government of the country, or whose rank, title, or official importance make their names and exact positions necessary to be known. The vast body of information which the work contains is conveniently arranged for instant reference. One more attempt to translate Homer into English verse, entitled Gradus ad Homerum, is just published by Mr. Shrimpton, of Oxford. The attempt is noticeable from the originality of the easy, colloquial, and humorous style which the author adopts, while keeping, as he asserts,

as close to the original as any translation in verse in the English language." The first four cantos only are translated; but some discursive and amusing notes are added.

Under the title of The School and Home Series, Mr. GORDON, of Edinburgh, publishes our old favourite, Robinson Crusoe, unabridged, and in a neat stiff cover, for eightpence. The Series also embraces a good selection of Children's Story Books, price twopence each.

The late Reverend G. S. Faber's work, entitled The Many Mansions in the House of my Father Scripturally Discussed and Practically Considered, with a Memoir of the Author by Francis A. Faber, Rector of Saunderton, Bucks, has just reached a third edition, published by Brown & Co., of Old Broad Street. The book contains a portrait of the author, and facsimile autograph, and forms a handsome library volume.

The stoppage of the Morning Chronicle leaves, we believe, the Morning Post the oldest of our London daily journals. It started in 1772-the year in which the first collected edition of Junius's Letters made their appearance, reprinted from the columns of the Public Advertiser. Some of our country papers date from a much earlier period; but the old country newspaper can hardly be considered to have had a distinct existence, it having been generally a mere reproduction of some London paper, with no local news whatever.

A new Conservative Monthly Review will make its appearance in June, under the title of The Church and State Review. It will be edited by Archdeacon Denison, associated with eminent theological and political writers, and will be published by Messrs. Saunders & Otley.

Dr. Charles Mackay has lately left England for the United States-we believe with the intention of contributing papers on American affairs to a London newspaper.

Mr. Richard Holt Hutton, whose name is announced as the author of one of Messrs. Macmillan's Tracts for Priests and People-On the Incarnation and Principles of Evidence-is, we believe, the present editor of the Economist newspaper. The tract in question will be accompanied by a letter from the Rev. F. D. Maurice.

Mr. Arthur Polehampton, brother of the author of the well-known Memoirs of the Siege of Lucknow, is about to publish a volume of Australian adventures, under the title of Kangaroo Land. A Second Series of Papers on "Butler's Analogy," by the Right Hon. J. Napier, ex-Lord Chancellor of Ireland, will be commenced in an early number of the Second Volume of The Quiver, Penny Weekly Magazine.

Agnes Dale, a new story, will be commenced in the April number of the New Penny Magazine, published monthly by Mr. Crockford. The publication presents also among its attractions various other tales and essays, and much instructive information, with numerous illustrations. Mr. Cairnes, the Professor of Political Economy in Queen's College, Galway, has in the press a work entitled The Slave Power: its Character, Career, and Probable Designs, being an attempt to explain the real issues involved in the American contest.

AUCTIONS DURING THE ENSUING FORTNIGHT.-Mr. Hodgson, April 3, the law library of the late R. H. Coote, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn; April 7, the entire remaining copies of Bradbury's NaturePrinted British Ferns and Seaweeds, 6 vols. medium 8vo., and other valuable books; April 15, the copyrights, stereotype plates, and entire stock of Dr. Lardner's popular scientific works.
