2 200 engravings on wood, principally from photographs. This will conclude Mr. Mayhew's work on the condition of "Those who will work, Those who cannot work, and Those who will not work," in the great metropolis. Messrs. MORGAN & CHASE announce that on May 1st, the Revival, a Weekly Summary of Events connected with the present Revival of Religion, will be doubled in size and price. Messrs. CASSELL, PETTER, & GALPIN will publish on May 12, the first number of the New Testament portion of Cassell's Illustrated Family Bible; also, on same day, with No. 234 of Cassell's Paper, the first number of Cassell's Illustrated Family Paper Exhibitor, a Record of the Great Exhibition of 1862. Messrs. HURST & BLACKETT, in addition to works already announced, have in the press: Adventures among the Andamans, by Dr. Mouat; Female Life in Prison, by a Prison Matron; Owen, a Waif, by the Author of High Church; A new Story by the Author of Margaret and Her Bridesmaids. Mr. Bernard MacCabe's authorised translation of Dr. Döllinger's celebrated work on the Papal Government is ready this day. Mr. JAMES HAGGER has now ready an entirely new work entitled The New Illustrated London Guide for 1862, by Edward Lance Tarbuck. Our contemporaries have generally announced that the third volume of Mr. Carlyle's Life of Frederick the Great will appear this month, but it will not be ready until about the middle of May. It will Mr. John Forster's Life of Sir John Eliot, rewritten and extended to two volumes post 8vo., uniform with the Arrest of the Five Members, will be published in November next. contain two portraits from original paintings at Port Eliot. The second series of Peaks, Passes, and Glaciers, announced by Messrs. LONGMAN & Co., promises to rival in beauty and interest its magnificent predecessor. The editor is Mr. Edward Shirley Kennedy, President of the Alpine Club, the members of which contribute the various sections. Among the contents we observe: Icelandic Travelling, by Edward T. Holland; The Ober Engadine, by Arthur Milman and the Editor; The Noric Alps, by W. Brinton; The Chamounix District, by J. G. Dodson, M.P., and the Rev. Charles Hudson; The Peaks, Passes, and Glaciers of Mount Rosa, by E. Schweitzer and others; The Urner, Bernese, and Valasian Oberland, by the Rev. Leslie Stephen, F. F. Tuckett, R.W. Elliot Forster, and others; besides the Graian Alps, the Cottian Alps, Excursions in Dauphiné, the Pyrenees, the Glaciers of Norway, Phenomena and Tables of the Heights of the principal Peaks and Passes, by various other members of the Club. The work, which is nearly ready, will appear in 2 vols. square crown 8vo., with four double maps and ten single maps, and 51 illustrations. The Queen, under the management of its new proprietor, Mr. Crockford, has taken a new start, and is likely to make way. Its peculiar province, that of conveying amusement and information to lady readers and family circles, is borne steadily in view. The publication is now under the management of a lady. Among books claiming our notice we find a neat little thick volume entitled The Cheshire Pilgrims, or Sketches of Crusading Life in the Thirteenth Century, by Frances M. Wilbraham, published by Mr. Morgan, of Paternoster Row, which forms an interesting contribution to the Romance of History; The Railway Traveller's Handbook, or Hints, Suggestions, and Advice, before the Journey, on the Journey, and after the Journey (Lockwood & Co.) supplies a great deal of useful information which we should certainly be puzzled to find elsewhere. It is a handy, portable eighteenpenny book, and one which in these locomotive times appeals to every class of the community. We have also a useful volume of tables, compiled by Mr. Edmund H. Haines, for the use of practical stationers and printers, entitled The Papermaker's and Stationer's Calculator. It will enable any person engaged in these trades to find in a moment the value, "Good and Retree," of a ream of paper of any weight, and of any given price per pound, the equivalent rate per ream of various sizes, the quantity of paper to be given out for a job-in short, to settle nearly all the problems which they are daily called upon to decide. We have also a first part of the Right Hon. Joseph Napier's Lectures on Butler's Analogy of Religion, published by Messrs. Hodges & Smith, of Dublin, the main object of which appears to be to direct attention to the exact import of the text of that great master of close reasoning-to make Butler, in fact, his own practical commentator. The Family Treasury of Sabbath Reading, edited by the Rev. Andrew Cameron, a monthly part of which is now before us, occupies a respectable place among the magazines which combine religious instruction with entertaining reading and general information useful to young and old. For cheapness, the monthly part, price sixpence, cannot certainly be surpassed. Messrs. GORDON & Co. have added to their School and Home Series of cheap children's books Miss Edgworth's Story entitled Lame Jervas, and The Story of the Robins, by Mrs. Trimmer. First numbers of the two new "Library Circulars" are before us. Mr. Mudie's occupies 32 pages 4to., and announces a circulation amongst his subscribers of 20,000. That of Messrs. Tinsley Brothers gives 48 pages medium 8vo. Both are devoted to new and second-hand books. Our obituary, fortunately, has not for some time included a name of equal eminence with that of the Rev. James White, Author of the Eighteen Christian Ceremonies, who died recently at Bonchurch, in the Isle of Wight, after a short illness, in his fifty-ninth year. Mr. White was born near Edinburgh, about 1804, and was early patronised by Lord Brougham, to whom, in 1832, he dedicated a poem called The Village Poorhouse, by a Country Curate. Mr. White became soon afterwards Vicar of Loxly, in Warwickshire, but subsequently abandoned his living to devote himself entirely to a life of literary leisure. He was a frequent contributor to the Quarterly Review, to Blackwood's Magazine, Household Words, and other publications, and was a successful author of blank-verse plays, of which his play of Feudal Times is best remembered. Among his other works are a History of France, History of England, Landmarks of the History of England, Greece, and Rome. A writer in a Scottish newspaper, who knew him well, observes:"Mr. White possessed the faculty of wit in a degree which was surpassed by very few of his contemporaries. It was of that kind, too, which was near akin to wisdom, and it was never at variance with high principle or kindly feeling. His conversation was even more delightful than his writings, and had all the attraction that can arise from the readiest and most genial pleasantry, combined with the most unaffected courtesy and gentleness of manner, and the most hearty recognition of the merits of others." Mr. White had long resided at Bonchurch, having considerable property in that neighbourhood. From Tasmania we hear that Messrs. J. WALSH & SONS have in the press, The House of the Forest of Lebanon, or the Proverbs of Solomon, a poetical commentary, by the Rev. W. Day, of Hobart Town, formerly a missionary in one of the South Sea Islands. On the 1st of May will appear the first part of a new periodical work, entitled Record of the International Exhibition of 1862, edited by Robert Mallet, Editor-in-Chief of the Practical Mechanic's Journal. It will embrace all the objects of practical importance and novelty exhibited, except those of Fine Arts proper, and will be completed in twelve parts, illustrated by about 1000 woodcuts and 24 engraved plates. Each part will contain 48 pages of letterpress. Among the contributors we observe the names of Professors Warington Smyth, Robert Hunt, Oldham, Donaldson, Field, Odling, Richardson; John Wilson, Professor of Agriculture, Edinburgh University; Voelcker; Mr. W. J. Macquorn Rankine, Dr. Frankland, Dr. Angus Smith, Dr. Diamond, Sir Henry James, Major-General Portlock, Mr. Thomas Romney Robinson, Mr. Edward F. Rimbault, and other writers of equal eminence. Since the pleasant German custom of the Christmas Tree has taken such firm root among our juvenile friends, we see no reason why an importation no less agreeable, though adapted only to a later stage of life, should not be equally welcome-we allude to the excellent foreign custom of celebrating what is called the Golden Wedding, or the fiftieth anniversary of a wedding day. Such at least must have been the feeling of every one of the numerous friends, including members of the bookselling and publishing trade, who were assembled on Monday evening last at the Albion, on the invitation of Mr. Henry Sotheran, of the well-known firm of Willis & Sotheran, to rejoice (we believe that we may in this instance allude without impropriety to a private gathering) over the fiftieth wedding day of his father, Mr. Sotheran, of Tower Street-one of those pleasant social evenings which occasionally enliven business friendship. While the Dunmow flitch has fallen into desuetude, we would gladly see this more delicate and pleasing fashion find extended favour among us; but, out of consideration for frail humanity, we would suggest that the Silver Wedding, or rejoicing over the completion of the twenty-fifth year of wedded life, is also a Continental custom.
