The Church of England.

On January 1, 1863, will be published, No. I., demy 8vo. price 1s. of

THE

CHURCHMAN'S FAMILY MAGAZINE:

CONTAINING

CONTRIBUTIONS BY THE CLERGY AND DISTINGUISHED
LITERARY MEN:

WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY EMINENT ARTISTS OF THE DAY.

IT

T is somewhat singular that, at a period when the Monthly Shilling Magazine has become an Institution-one of the most attractive and influential forms of current English Literature, and, as such, a social instrument of great powerthe Church of England should not yet be represented by a FAMILY MAGAZINE of the first class.

We see on all sides periodical literature bearing away the ripest mental fruit of our ablest thinkers, and attracting our most finished writers; but the Church of England, embracing amongst her leaders some of the noblest and best cultivated intellects of the kingdom, does not yet possess an organ which will enable her to utilise the power of the Press in a form which very closely affects our daily life.

It is proposed to fill this void in our Monthly Literature by the establishment of THE CHURCHMAN'S FAMILy Magazine.

The new Periodical will be conducted on sound Church principles, free from any tinge of narrow, party spirit. It will present healthy, cheerful, varied reading for the Family Circle. It will be thoughtful and instructive as well as entertaining, but it will not be heavy. It will include good stories, and the Illustrations and external features will be equal to anything which has yet been given to the Public in these days of Shilling Literature.

All Literary and Artistic Communications should be addressed to the Editor, care of the Publishers.

OUR customary half-yearly Educational Number, with which we present our readers this day.

is, as usual, solid with the copious lists of familiar titles in this important department of literary production. As a glance at the list of exhibitors of educational works in the Great Exhibition would show, a publisher of educational books is no longer one of a class apart almost

or exammation

all our publishing houses of repute being issuers of some class of school, coll that there is any

books. Whatever complaints there may be, it is certain that no one can

want of variety, either in character, form, or price, of the almost numberless works submitted to the choice of those who are engaged in the task of educating either the very young or the adult student. As usual, most houses have their specialté and distinctive character, or are known in connection with some renowned series, or course of instruction. Novelties are, of course, not numerous, if we except the new and improved editions of old favourites which are always appearing. Some few announcements have, however, caught our eye in looking over our adver tisement pages. For instance: Messrs. Longman & Co. announce a Manual of English Literature Historical and Critical, by Thomas Arnold; The Six Standards of Arithmetic, Standard
