round numbers 202,000, against 188,000 in the corresponding period of last year. This is in great measure, of course, attributable to the new tariff in the United States; but it must be remembered that the old system of allowing a drawback on printed books equal to the duty on paper acted in a great degree as an encouragement to exportation. As regards new books, the abolition of the drawback is, of course, immaterial. Exporters now receive no allowance for paper duty, simply because they no longer pay any. Instead of paying to the exciseman, and getting their money back again from the Custom-house, they now neither pay nor get back. But everyone knows that, as regards old stocks and remainders, the drawback was an important item, and its abolition must to some extent have affected the Book Export trade. We are reluctantly compelled to postpone till next number the continuation of our remarks upon the ornamental books, bookbinding, &c., in the International Exhibition.
