LITERARY news is rarely abundant at this season of the year-though, doubtless, the new
Library Company, which proposes to raise a hundred thousand pounds to be spent in buying
new books to circulate through the country, will help, as far it goes, to give activity to literary
enterprise. Of the merits of the scheme we know nothing; but of course, so far as publishers
are concerned, the more Mudies, Booths, Churtons, and Hookhams the better; for although it
may be said that there are but a certain number of readers, whose patronage must be divided,
it is certain that the increased facilities resulting from sharper rivalry tend to increase demand.
Among books immediately forthcoming we may perhaps be permitted to allude to Sir Edward
Bulwer Lytton's Strange Story, which will be issued on Saturday next, in advance of its com-
pletion in All the Year Round. The work will be in two thick volumes at 24s. instead of in the
usual three, a form which has lately been going somewhat out of fashion. The old guinea and
a-half is, as every one knows, in many cases merely a nominal price; and we trust that the
attempt to break through an old-established rule will meet with favour.

In LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AND ART we have Mr. Payne Collier's beautiful edition of Spenser
Poetical Works, in 5 vols. with a Life of the Poet, and abundant notes and indexes; Mr. Nassau
Senior, the well-known writer on Political Economy, publishes a work on American Slavery,
being a reprint of an article on Uncle Tom's Cabin, of which a portion has appeared in the
