CLASSIFIED LISTS OF VARIOUS WORKS PUBLISHED BY MESSRS. LONGMAN AND CO.

IN THE USUAL BRANCHES OF

Classical and English General Educational Literature.

WITH the view of making this CATALOGUE OF SCHOOL BOOKS available to some extent as a Manual of Reference on Educational Literature in general, Messrs. LONGMAN & Co. have, at the suggestion of several eminent teachers, had the various works classified on the basis of the valuable Lists formerly issued by the Committee of Council on Education. The whole of the classification of subjects adopted in the Committee's Lists is retained in the present Catalogue, with the addition of divisions devoted to Greek, Latin, French, and some other branches of education not taught in the Inspected Schools. The Table of Contents, as follows:

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]
[blocks in formation]
[blocks in formation]

-refers to all these divisions; and the Alphabetical Index [pp. 96 to 100] combines the advantages of the old alphabetical arrangement of the body of the Catalogue under Authors'

names.

In the present Catalogue, as far as possible, the more elementary works are placed first in each division respectively, followed, in a progressive order, by works suitable for more advanced pupils. It is, however, obviously impracticable to adhere strictly to such an order; and almost equally so to separate books of a purely elementary character from such as are appropriate for an academic or collegiate course of studies. For this reason, a few lines of analysis have been added to almost every book of which the full title (in all cases given) does not appear to convey an adequate idea of its object, scope, and use. This new feature will, it is hoped, both increase the utility and facilitate the use of this Catalogue to all persons who may consult it for practical

purposes.

ILLUSTRATED SPELLING AND READING BOOK

WITH UPWARDS OF 150 ENGRAVINGS.]

In this work, the aim has been to render every page interesting to the young, by the free introduction of Engravings of a superior character, illustrating subjects which cannot fail to delight and instruct the youthful mind. The lessons commence with the Alphabet, and proceed by a regular gradation of syllabication to the most difficult words, with alternate reading lessons, in which the words, for the most part, are similar to those in the spelling lessons. The subjects of the reading lessons are attractive in their style, and contain much information suited to the capacities of children.

The object of THE LIBRARY COMPANY is to furnish all Classes of Readers with Books in every Department of English, Foreign, and Colonial Literature, as soon as issued from the Press. The supply will be in proportion to the demand, no prejudice whatever being allowed to influence the management of the undertaking.

The present is peculiarly a book-reading as distinguished from a book-buying period, and one, therefore, in which there must be an increasing demand for Circulating Libraries. Already the Proprietor of a large Library is advertising that he

has added more than Half a Million volumes to his Stock in three years and a-half. This fact will show the dimensions to which a Circulating Library may attain, and the probability that such a scheme as THE LIBRARY COMPANY must be successful.

Whatever facilities have been hitherto afforded for obtaining the literature of our own Country, Subscribers to our Libraries have never yet had an adequate supply of Foreign and Colonial Books placed at their command: to this want the Directors will give special care.

Although it is not proposed to make complete Collections in the Departments of Law, Medicine, Theology, &c., yet the Directors intend to provide such a number of standard works under these heads as shall make the Library useful and comprehensive.

From the commercial basis upon which THE LIBRARY COMPANY is formed, and by the introduction of a low and popular Scale of Subscriptions to meet the wants of readers of all Classes, by the organisation of new and more

efficient methods for the expeditious circulation and exchange of Books, by the opening of a West-End Office and of numerous Local Depôts, by the appointment of well-selected Agencies, by the remunerative disposal of the Surplus Stock, and by the general completeness of the working machinery, -the Directors have reason to believe that the undertaking must command a larger measure of success than could be obtained by any similar private speculation.

Original Shareholders will enjoy the following privileges, in addition to their rights as ¡Proprietors:

A HOLDER OF 20 SHARES SHALL BE ENTITLED
TO THE PRIVILEGE OF AN ANNUAL SUB-
SCRIBER OF £1 1s.

A HOLDER OF 40 SHARES SHALL BE ENTITLED
TO THE PRIVILEGE OF AN ANNUAL SUB-
SCRIBER OF £2 2s.

AND A HOLDER OF 100 SHARES SHALL BE ENTITLED TO THE PRIVILEGE OF AN ANNUAL SUBSCRIBER TO THE LIBRARY OF £5 59. Thus, in any case, an immediate Dividend will be secured; and the Directors have no doubt that a large additional per-centage may be realised. The advantage of becoming Shareholders under this proposal will be obvious to Booksellers, Proprietors fessional Men, and the Public generally. of Country Libraries, Literary Institutions, Pro

On the establishment of the Company, there will be no charge for preliminary expenses, except for sums actually paid.

In the event of there being no allotment, the Deposits will be returned in full.
