"By far the larger part of the volume is filled with an account of the

various counties of the state, giving such common facts concerning
their history, topography, population, towns and industries as usually
appear in gazetteers. Numerous woodcuts are given. The work is
crudely done. Lapse of time has taken from it nearly all the value
it may once have possessed." Larned's Literature of American his-
tory.

"A book abounding in solid qualities, but possessing no popular merit.
The author never acquired the art of effective expression, and conse-
quently his readers are likely to be few and select. The work is of
great value to the historical student; but those who read for the mere
pleasure of the hour will scarcely advance further than the first few
chapters." C. K. Adams.

"A book of genealogy and family memoirs, with an abundant addition of history... The intermarriages give the author an opportunity to sketch the fortunes of the Van Cortlandts, Van Rensselaers, Livingstons and others. So closely were the Schuylers concerned with Indian affairs, that the author considers himself justified in recounting much of the history of relations with the Iroquois and the French during the colonial period. The Schuylers were Dutch, and that occasions a disquisition of nearly 200 pages on the history of New Netherland. But the matter presented is reliable, and the book is a valuable commentary on many phases of social development in provincial New York." Larned's Literature of American history. SEVERANCE, Frank Hayward.

"The material of the work throughout is drawn very largely from the
journals of the Assembly and of the Legislative Council...It is
strictly a political history... The style is simple, concise, dry... Ranks
with Stith's Virginia and Hutchinson's Massachusetts as one of the
worthiest examples of historical literature produced in later colonial
times." Larned's Literature of American history.

Really ends with 1747, in spite of the title-page. A later edition in two
volumes brings the history down to 1762.
