The author aims to prove that the Commedia was composed by a follower of Wiclif about the end of the 15th century.

Apart from the ludicrous weakness or falsity of these socalled arguments, did it never occur to a clever and learned man, as Hardouin certainly was, that (1) many MSS. of the Divina commedia much earlier than 1400 actually exist; and (2) that several commentaries were written in the course of the fourteenth century upon the supposed non-existent poem?"- - Moore, Dante and his early biographers, p. 180.

From "The most elegant and wittie epigrams of Sir John Harington," London, 1633. The story is the familiar one of the elephant, and belongs with those versions of it gathered by Papanti from Poggio Bracciolini, Anisio, Domenichi, and Tomitano; but this particular one was apparently unknown to Papanti.
