Stradan is the French form of this name. The artist was born in Bruges in 1536. "Après avoir appris la peinture dans sa ville natale, Stradanus, voulant se perfectionner, parcourut l'Italie. Arrivé dans cette contrée, il alla d'abord à Rome, où il étudia avec soin les œuvres de Raphaël et de Michel-Ange. Avant de quitter Rome, il peignit en concurrence avec Daniel de Volterre et François Salviati, quelques-unes des peintures du Belvédère. It is prefaced by an inferior summary of the Inferno and Purgatorio of Dante, which has by some been ascribed to Jacopo Gradenigo, by others to Menghino Mezzani. After describing this and other preliminary matter contained in the MS., Tambellini takes Scarabelli to task for having said that in making the notes on the Commedia, Gradenigo merely copied from Jacopo della Lana's comment. Twenty pages of Tambellini's article are devoted to comparing, in parallel columns, the expositions of Jacopo della Lana and Gradenigo.
