The New Exhaustive Concordance to the Bible. BY JAMES STRONG, S.T.D., LL.D. To be Issued Early in 1893. This work is the result of thirty years of careful study and minute labor by the author, with more than one hundred assistants at various times and in the several branches. THE MERITS OF THE WORK. 1. It is the only complete Concordance of the Common English Bible, as a brief comparison with any other will immediately prove. Every previous Concordance, from Cruden to Young, omits many words and very many passages altogether; this exhibits every word, and every passage in which each occurs. 2. It is the simplest Concordance. The author never forgets that the chief use of a Concordance is to find a given passage as quickly and certainly as possible by means of a well-known word contained in it. For this reason he has not in the slightest degree sacrificed simplicity and directness to any of the subordinate objects of his Concordance, important and valuable though these are. 3. It is a Concordance to the Original Hebrew and Greek. Strong's Concordance enables any reader, whether scholar or otherwise, to ascertain, by means of a reference number, not only the Hebrew, Chaldee or Greek word of which any significant word in the ordinary English Version is the translation, but likewise the exact form, precise pronunciation and various meanings, both essential and derived, of the word, together with a synopsis of all its renderings elsewhere in the English Bible. 4. It is a Bible Lexicon, containing all the significant Hebrew, Chaldee and Greek words of the original Scriptures, with pronunciation plainly marked, not only showing the derivation and common meaning of each word, but giving a complete list of the different English words into which it is translated in the Bible. 5. It is a sufficient Concordance to the Revised Version likewise, and this both ways: that is, under the old as well as the new word, when the former is changed in such a way or degree as to affect the meaning. It is the first Concordance of the entire New Version, and the only Concordance that takes notice of the American variations, which, by the way, have never before been exhibited in full in such a comparison. But it also enables the reader to ascertain the reason for the change, by referring to the different original words which are thereby intended to be distinguished, and pointing out the adoption of a different reading in the original text. It is thus an essential key to the Revised Version itself, and renders its changes luminous and interesting.
