K. With British and braves: story of the War of 1812. Cin., Curts & Jennings, [1898.] c. 301 p. il. D. cl., $1.

[2319 The War of 1812 contained many romantic adventures, a few of which have found their way into our popular histories, while some are perpetuated by tradition only. In this story the main facts as related to Ohio and the Northwest are gathered together, with just enough of the fictitious element to combine them into a continuous narrative. The best and the worst traits of the Indian character are presented. The cowardice of Hull, the cruelty of Proctor, the bravery of Perry and Croghan, and the skilful management of Harrison, are graphically depicted.

Women and economics: a study of the economic relation between men and women as a factor in social evolution. Bost., Small, Maynard & Co., 1898. c. 7+340 p. D. cl., $1.50.

[2332 The author has heretofore put her thoughts upon the world and the theories for its improvement into verse She contends that the present inequality of women in their relations with men and society rests upon the fact that woman has allowed herself to become wholly dependent upon man in marital life. This, she says, leads to an excess of sex feeling and destroys general force and capacity. Her ideal life for woman seems to be professional, public, and club life, which, she contends, would develop her mentally and morally and make her more fit to be an intelligent guide to her children.

Stevens, Jos. Earle. Yesterdays in the Philippines. N. Y., C: Scribner's Sons, 1898. c. 17+232 p. il. maps, D. el., $1.50. [2333 The author gained his knowledge of the Philippines through a two years' residence in Manila. He went from Boston there at the close of 1893 as a representative of an American firm in the hemp business, and was one of four Americans in the business colony of Manila. He had a varied business and social experience, learned something of typhoons and earthquakes, and seems to have been a keen observer. He tells of the unfamiliar life, the quaint natives, and their odd customs and costumes with amusing zest. His book presents a perfect picture of the all-round life of the islands, with their resources, possibilities, government, inhabitants, etc. His opinion is that we do not want them (the islands) and could not run them. book is freely illustrated with reproductions of photographs.
