bound and cased in as many and as beautiful styles as their celebrated Lansdowne Shakespeare, for which they have invented another new binding, intended specially for birthday and wedding purposes. It is of watered silk and vellum cloth, boxed in a gold embossed panelled cabinet. A new edition of Boutell's and Aveling's standard work on "Heraldry Ancient and Modern " is also just ready for the trade; and also a new edition of Nugent's "French Dictionary," edited by J. Duhamel, French master at Harrow, England. For young people the preparations are lavish, but it is still a little too early to announce definitely just what will appear during the season. The price of their edition of Cooper's Leather-Stocking Tales" has been reduced, and a choice illustrated edition is in preparation of Marryat's "Masterman Ready," Settlers in Canada,' and "Poor Jack." The Owl King" will be a book of fairy tales by H. E. Inman; "The Fortunes of Claude," a story for boys, by Edgar Pickering; "The Clock Struck One," a story of mystery by Fergus Hume, adapted for young and old; and other titles thus far given include "The Boys of Fairmeade," by M. C. Rowsell; and a complete "Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes, Tales, and Jingles." The Warne color-books and painting-books are always salable, and there will be some new ones this year, which will be found classified in preceding list under the heading Juvenile Literature.

THE WERNER COMPANY will have in "Rem

ington's Frontier Sketches" a new pictorial collection comprising many of Remington's most characteristic drawings of life in the West during the "Indian troubles," which will be gotten up as a handsome holiday book. Other illustrated books in preparation are: "Masters of Brush and Chisel," a selection from the world's greatest galleries and most famous private collections; "Historic Men and Scenes," pictures by the masters collected from every land; "The Old Masters with the Children," including famous works of the world's greatest artists on juvenile subjects; and Stoddard's "Glimpses of the World," which until now was a subscription book, but is to be handled by the trade this season. Professor James A. Harrison's "Spain in History" has been revised by Græme Mercer Adam and will be brought out in a sumptuous edition with many illustrations; and there will also be a new edition of Hezekiah Butterworth's "The Story of America." Many other new books are classified elsewhere under Juvenile Literature. A book just issued upon a subject of universal and enduring interest is "The Determination of Sex," by Leopold Schenk, of Vienna, who explains his theory that sex depends upon conditions in the mother which may be changed and modified by special diet and mode of life. Dr. Schenk's work is wholly scientific and worthy of study. A de luxe edition of "Napoleon from Corsica to St. Helena" is specially recommended to the trade; also "The Crown Jewels of Art," made up of reproductions of masterpieces of painting and sculpture that have been on exhibition at various international expositions.

THOMAS WHITTAKER, New York City, has just issued his announcement of new books for the fall season. Among the forthcoming works

|

are many of value. One of the finest is a library edition of "Cathedrals of England," with 168 illustrations by Herbert Railton, bound sumptuously in two royal octavo volumes with Florentine wrappers. His list of Japanese books is an attractive novelty for the holiday trade. In conjunction with his wellknown series of Anatomical Models he has prepared a carefully executed "Life-Size Model of the Human Body," from head to feet, which will sell at $10, being about one-third of the price heretofore asked for similar models. "The Romance of Glass-Making" is a sketch of the history of ornamental glass by Walter Gandy; "Frances E. Willard," by Florence Witts, tells the story of the noble woman who for so many years worked in the cause of temperance. In theological literature there. will be "Visions," Sunday morning sermons at St. Bartholomew's, New York, by Rev. David H. Greer, D.D.; "Questions and Answers About the Bible," a handbook of Bible study by Rev. Albert W. Hitchcock; "Blessed Are Ye," a series of addresses on the Beatitudes by Rev. F. B. Meyer; and "The Incarnate Word, and Other Sermons," by Rev. Anthony Schuyler, D.D. In fiction the new books will be "The Patriots of Palestine, a story of the Maccabees," by Charlotte M. Yonge; "My Lady's Slipper," by Mary H. Debenham; "The Autobiography of a Bull-Dog," "A Roman Household," and many books for young people. Mr. Whittaker will publish a cheap edition of the popular year-book, Royal Helps for Loyal Living," to retail for just half the origi

nal price.

W. A. WILDE & Co. will issue at once "Lost in Nicaragua," by Hezekiah Butterworth, illustrated by Harry Sandham, telling of life among coffee farmers and banana hands in the region around the great canal; "The Romance of American Colonization," by William Elliot Griffis, who describes in his usual happy manner how the foundation stones of our history were laid; and several volumes of historical fiction dealing with different periods of American history. "A Son of the Revolution," Elbridge S. Brooks' fine work, has reached the distinction of a second edition, as has also "The M. M. C.," a story of mining life in the Great Rockies, by Charlotte M. Vaile. "A Soldier of the Legion" is a story of the great Northwest by Charles Ledyard Norton, illustrated by Frank O. Small; "Two Young Patriots" gives the story of Burgoyne's surrender as it strikes the knowledge and imagination of Everett T. Tomlinson, and his text is illustrated by Charles Copeland; and Amy E. Blanchard and Ada Waugh, who have in former years done such good literary and artistic work in partnership, have prepared "A Girl of '76" to fire the patriotism of girl readers especially. Other juveniles of more general interest of subject will be “ Katrina," by Ellen Douglas Deland, author of "Oakleigh;" "The Young Supercargo," by William Drysdale, a story of the merchant marine; and ten little volumes to be known as "The Allan Books," which Lucy Wheelock is to edit, books specially suitable for prizes, etc.

E. & J. B. YOUNG & Co. are to be the agents in this country for a limited edition of a very beautiful art work entitled "Queen Victoria's Treasures at Windsor Castle," with notes and

descriptions by the Marquis of Lorne, illustrated by a series of torty plates from watercolor drawings by William Gibb, printed by the finest process of chromo-lithography. The work will be issued in four sections, imperial folio, each containing ten plates. The samples of the color work shown promise an exquisitely beautiful set of pictures of Queen Victoria's china, furniture, etc. Another beautiful art work in colors will be "British Birds," by R. Bowdler Sharpe, in large quarto size. "The Book of Daniel from the Christian Standpoint," by the Rev. Dr. John Kennedy, will be volume seven of the Bible Student's Library; and among important religious works in preparation are Parish Priests and Their People in the Middle Ages," by the Rev. C. Croslegh; "Holy Thoughts for Quiet Moments," by the Rt. Rev. A. H. Dunn; "Memoirs of Acton W. Sillitoe, Bishop of Westminster," by Rev. H. H. Gowen; and several others classified in preceding list under the heading Religion and Philosophy. A long list

of children's books is also classified under the heading Juvenile Literature. The Youngs are agents for the publications of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and their imprint is placed each year upon excellent books for young people. They are also agents for the Bibles and prayer-books and hymnals of Eyre & Spottiswoode, and as usual offer various new editions of their celebrated books.

A new series of "Text and Reference Bibles" is to be issued in new flexible bindings; there will be an entirely new edition, printed from new plates, of the "Emerald Octavo Reference Bible;" and also printed from new plates, "Robert Raikes' Sunday School Bible," prepared to meet the very general demand for a Bible possessing the essential features of a "Teachers' Bible," yet less bulky as to size and matter. "The Variorum Teachers' Bible" will have revised aids and maps, and many half-tone illustrations selected and described by Rev. C. J. Ball, assisted by F. G. Kenyon. The Prayer-Books and Hymnals" are also gotten up in every style of binding imaginable. Only a look at their catalogue can give an idea of the variety of Bibles ready for the fall.
