THE AMERICAN PUBLISHERS CORPORATION has closed out its entire sheet and bound stock of books, and will not be able for some time, at least, to supply any of its list to the trade. The bulk of its stock went to retailers and the remainder to De Wolfe, Fiske & Co., of Boston, Burrows Brothers, of Cleveland, and A. C. McClurg & Co., of Chicago. The plates of the corporation will be sold later by the Manhattan Trust Company as trustees of the mortgage. As we have already noted there is a movement afoot to build up a new company, but at the present nothing definite can be stated.

The author's purpose seems to be to awaken in writers a sense of responsibility as to the characters they create. The argument advanced is that these fictitious beings become forceful influences for good or evil, their powers depending largely on the strength of portrayal and individual interpretation. These theories are demonstrated by describing the peculiar impres sions of Arthur Vivian, supposed to have been transported to Ariel, a sphere peopled by the Pendennises, the Newcomes, Becky Sharp, Consuelo, Robert Elsmere, John Ward, Cassaubon, and other characters of famous authors.
