From "The most elegant and wittie epigrams of Sir John Harington," London, 1633. The story is the familiar one of he elephant, and belongs with those versions of it gathered by Papanti from Poggio Bracciolini, Anisio, Domenichi, and Tomiano; but this particular one was apparently unknown to Papanti.

Zunächst wird in der Anecdote, welche Petrarca Rer. memor., , von Dante und Cane erzählt, die Lesart der Drucke, cher auch Papanti (Dante secondo la trad. e il novell., 2) folgt, nach den Hss. dahin verbessert, dass parumper umacior statt parum per contumaciam, etc., fastidiosis studiosis hergestellt wird, womit jede Missbilligung von te's Charakter von Seiten Petr. wegfällt. Ferner wird enüber geäusserten Zweifeln die Möglichkeit der Thatsache esen, dass der Vater Petrarca's, wie dieser behauptet, zuch mit Dante verbannt worden sei. Endlich veröffentlicht tis nach einer im Besitze von Carlo Morbis [read Morbio] Mailand befindlichen Hs. ein, wenn auch bereits erwähntes, ungedruckt gebliebenes Gedicht zum Lobe Dante's, welches e Ueberschrift dem Petrarca zuschreibt, 26 Hexameter, die mehrfacher Emendation bedürfen, aber auch emendirt m Verfasser nicht grosse Ehre machen." - Zeitschrift für anische Philologie, Bd. i, Bibliographie 1875-76, p. 17.
